Actually, I suspect he didn't.  The xrandr output makes it look like
he's just not getting EDID at all.

There was a fix for EDID fetch from HDMI in 2.6.29.1-104, but it
certainly ought to be included in current kernels.  There might have
been a followup fix since though, I'll check.
