I only get this on the first sound that is played during login, all
other sounds are fine. High CPU load at any point while the sound is

Chuck, do you have gst-mixer installed? If so, look under
System->Preferences->Advanced Volume Control

At least with that you don't need xfce installed.

I think gst-mixer allows setting this.
