newbie guide to asterisk on f11?

i'm trying to verify someone else's intro guide to asterisk, and
their first example (doing a "console dial 1001") fails, with:

No such command 'console dial 1001' (type 'help console dial' for
other possible commands)

normally, this suggests that "either the channel driver
(chan_alsa.so or chan_oss.so) isn't loaded or it wasn't properly
initialized. If this happens, check the settings in modules.conf and
alsa.conf or oss.conf."

the rpm package for asterisk for f11 doesn't contain either of
/etc/asterisk/{alsa,oss}.conf, and i tweaked
/etc/asterisk/modules.conf to load chan_alsa.so but that didn't solve
anything so, before i dig myself in too deep here, is there a
newbie-level doc that shows how to install, configure and test a
couple simple examples of asterisk under f11? thanks.
