AHA--after an update, I now have it working in both urxvt and uxterm
(which are both far more important to me than opera, as I can always use
firefox. 

BUT--opera works too!!

Ok, now I'm a happy camper. 

I tried uninstalling all Japanese support packages.  Then I ran an
update, noting that glibc, among others was updated.  Then, I
ran yum -y install @japanese-support. 

After that, it all worked.
