X does not work with ATI based machines

To me it sounds like it is at least in the same part of the world, but
different.  My bug is something that happened just with the most recent
kernel.  The previous kernel was ok. If I'm interpreting things
correctly dmsg seems to hint that my bug is a boring null-pointer
dereference.
