  quick followup:  i just popped into System->Prefs->Display, at which
point i was given a choice of resolution, the highest being the
correct one of 1280x800.  i selected it, saved, and now things seem
fine.

  but it's still odd where that initial 2080x800 res came from, and
what i should have done differently to be able to see the entire
screen during firstboot.

  whoops, i just restarted the system and i'm back to 2080x800.
very strange.
