Well, I wouldn't speak about it so frankly but your many messages force me to explain it better, especially for those who has no previous background about what has happened on the Fedora list. I just want to remove any misunderstanding regarding the topic. Once upon a time I was doing translation and contribution through arabeyes.org. I am doing this in my very limited time. I did try to move the translation project to a better situation and I have some good relation with KACST (King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology). They agreed to support the project and let me work full time on translation with other translators for a specified time. (I haven't received a single additional penny for this but) I was very happy that time and was eager to work intensively to improve the translation. I send a message to arabeyes asking for being the maintainer of KDE for one month only so I can utilize the power under my hand better. To my surprise arabeyes refused it and let me feel as if I am taking something from them. For the record KDE translation that time was in a stagnancy and the maintainer is not within reach. When they felt it, they assigned the maintainership to a very smart and good guy whom I respect a lot (isam bayazidi). But Isam was very busy that time to the degree that many files we translated are not committed to this minute. Arabeyes is very conservative about changes and this has forced me to be very cautious when speaking about maintainership again. The one who has time should be the maintainer and Maha is completely right when she mentioned "Free One Comes First": I could speak more about it but let's stop here and I think you got the idea I want to make clear that I am not running after being a maintainer and never feel this let's you a better man. There are more capable people here no doubt but if they can't save more time than me, I would continue doing it. The one who has time should be the > maintainer and Maha is completely right when she mentioned > "Free One Comes First": Munzir .. We are not arabeyes here, and if you go through the archieve of the mailing list, all what I went through with arabeyes to straight the idea about maintainership and controling is not an option and should not be accepted (At least this is my point of view). So it would not have ever thought of that anyone should control this. It is good to have defined team and work in an organized way , yet it is not acceptable that someone think he control or he should control everything or else things will not be good. Arabeyes did an initial work on this project thankfully, yet I do not think the policy and way of handling things is beind done right over there. After all , we did finish this translation, and we will continoue our commited task, we will fix the translation and provide a best practice for the Arabic Community. I have no doubt that the team here now can do that. > I could speak more about it but let's stop here and I think you got the idea > I want to make clear that I am not running after being a maintainer > and never feel this let's you a better man. The min you will get busy and we need a maintainer we can move it to someone else who has more time at a point. It seems someone ppl miss the point, it is not about a maintainer , it is about a team, maintainer is to co-ordinate not to control. Sorry for not actively participating, but I was very busy. Things have improved now, and probably are going better for me. So I'll try to do better. And yes, we need to do better. I would suggest that we choose some 5 files (assuming 5 active people) and try to check them. Each person should ask if there is anything which is doubtful, so we get to standardise any doubtful terminology. Probably recheck these files by another active member before committing. After this round, we each grab a new file and do the same. Issues will be much less this time, so we can use a single pass. We proceed in groups of 5, allowing for variance in speed and file size (ie whoever finishes grabs a new one). We need to check the differences from the .pot files first, as mentioned by Sarah. karouri ===== "Never trust a computer you can't lift." Categorizing PO Files: Well i want to say before we start to taking files one by one and start reviewing.. Someone classify the PO files into categories so we can while we reviewing concentrate on certain Terms regards specific topic.. installation stuffs(booting..kickstart..) or security stuffs or web stuffs.. am not sure if this applicable or not.. 2. Terminologies/Phrases: such deamon..logins.. user home directory..scripts.. ssh..ftp..http..cgi.. How to shape-up its translation in a final phrase.. i don't know whether we should consider it like product names or not, but i guess it should be attached with more describtive text. also.. something like this phrase: "Allow sysadm_t to do almost everything" The same thing the word 'sysadm_t' i don't know whether it's a service or a deamon or whatever kind of process it is.. but i think it should be attached with text defines what sysadm_t is?! Note regarding this specific sentence: 'almost do everything'..i don't know when/where this string prompts.. but i guess it shouldn't be translated into such way like this'يمكنه القيام بكل شىء'.. we have to take care of the Meaning of such strings.. i want to ask.. how can i test these po files on fedora and see arabic supported.. i didn't install fedora but i just want to know how. 3.Translation Conflicts: last thing i guess.. We have to settle a way between us whenever a conflict occurs in our translation.. we are not a big team..just 6 active members, and voting won't be a good solution in our case.. i guess!! for example: the word 'directory'..i would prefer 'مجلد' better than 'دليل'. because 'مجلد' have the meaning of being a container.. holds files inside it.. but 'دليل' give me the meaning of being a guider or guided to something.. like telephone directory or whatever.. Maybe am wrong maybe am right.. but there is a conflict(little one) and we should settle a way to solve such a conflict whenever it occurs.. something other than voting because we are only 6 no more(hope we get bigger).. and we all follow such way.. or is somebody here have the rights of Veto :) BTW, What's .pot files you'v been talking about!! :)) Maha. -- Curiosity killed the CAT :) NEU: Bis zu 10 GB Speicher f?r e-mails & Dateien! 1 GB bereits bei GMX FreeMail http://www.gmx.net/de/go/mail From munzirtaha at newhorizons.com.sa Wed Sep 8 09:38:36 2004 From: munzirtaha at newhorizons.com.sa (Munzir Taha) Date: Wed, 8 Sep 2004 12:38:36 +0300 Subject: [Fedora-trans-ar] Find/Replace in All Files.. tool/script ?! If you use kbabel for translations you will save yourself a lot of hassle and details because you can look how the word is translated in other files. It's a one line sed or perl script but the problem this may yield erroneous results when the word is withing a context that's different. This is why we have comments on the .po files telling the context. A person that already knows what sysadm_t is will know it in English, so I would transcribe that. Besides, sysadm_t is a domain name in selinux, and like user names, it shouldn't be translated. Has anybody translated 'root' yet? (Not that I know much about selinux, anyway..) I had this problem in the anaconda file. There was SCSI, which I put as is. But more complicated was something like FCP LUN, which you will probably meet when you start to use zSeries machines and connect via Fibre Channel. When you do that, a translation wouldn't be your largest problem anyway. > > 3.Translation Conflicts: > > last thing i guess.. I would propose that rather than we actively do some work in categorizing let's take representative files and check them then go to files that are similar. For example, for the installation stuff let's review anaconda.po for example. It will be much easier to review kickstart files and other related files if this is done. Isn't it better now to > have at least correct mere translation rather than nice few explanations > mixed with lots of clearly wrong translations? What others think(tm)? In the other e-mail I meant 'root' as the root (administrator) user. Now for this specific case 'root' is not translatable, neither is 'sysadm_t' which is a domain name (think of it as a group name, or a policy name, though it is neither) by the same token. And besides, our mission is not _only_ depending on end-user knowledge, it is actually totally defined by it. There are some jobs that are not actually done by normal users. So they wouldn't use that. In such a case it is clearly better to translate that so that expert users will understand that. For example, there are some aspects of hardware that will not be used by a normal user, let's say we are using FC (Fibre Channel) networking. Any user of that network will know that FCP is the Fibre Channel Protocol that is used to interface SCSI on Fibre Channel. As many translators will not know this, it is risky for anyone who is not professional in this area to translate this. Not every translator is a 'Telecommunications and Electronics Engineer' you know:) Besides, the one who will use this FCP knows much more than us anyway; a wrong translation will hinder rather than help him. Let alone that technical terms have a whole lot of different translations in the Arab world.. > > > -- > Munzir Taha PGP Key available > gpg --recv-keys --keyserver www.mandrakesecure.net F0671821 > > Telecommunications and Electronics Engineer > Linux Registered User #279362 at http://counter.li.org > Maintainer of the Open Arabic Bugs Project at > http://wiki.arabeyes.org/OpenBugs > Maintainer of Fedora Arabic Translation Project > CIW Designer, ICDL, MOUS, Linux+ > New Horizons CLC > Riyadh, SA > > -- > Fedora-trans-ar mailing list > Fedora-trans-ar at redhat.com > http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-ar > Salam, karouri ===== "Never trust a computer you can't lift." Chiefly British: Variant of Demon 2. Variant of daimon 3. Computer Science: A Program or process that sits idly in the background until it is invoked to perform its task. Vs. Demon: 1. An evil supernatural being; a devil. 2. A persistently tormenting person, force, or passion: the demon of drug addiction 3. One who is extremely zealous, skillful, or diligent: worked away like a demon; a real demon at math. 4. Variant of daimon For Operating Systems: /day'mn/ or /dee'mn/ (From the mythological meaning, later rationalised as the acronym "Disk And Execution MONitor") A program that is not invoked explicitly, but lies dormant waiting for some condition(s) to occur. The idea is that the perpetrator of the condition need not be aware that a daemon is lurking (though often a program will commit an action only because it knows that it will implicitly invoke a daemon). For example, under ITS writing a file on the LPT spooler's directory would invoke the spooling daemon, which would then print the file. The advantage is that programs wanting files printed need neither compete for access to, nor understand any idiosyncrasies of, the LPT. They simply enter their implicit requests and let the daemon decide what to do with them. Daemons are usually spawned automatically by the system, and may either live forever or be regenerated at intervals. Unix systems run many daemons, chiefly to handle requests for services from other hosts on a network. Most of these are now started as required by a single real daemon, inetd, rather than running continuously. Examples are cron (local timed command execution), rshd (remote command execution), rlogind and telnetd (remote login), ftpd, nfsd (file transfer), lpd (printing). Daemon and demon are often used interchangeably, but seem to have distinct connotations (see demon). The term "daemon" was introduced to computing by CTSS people (who pronounced it /dee'mon/) and used it to refer to what ITS called a dragon. ====> Conculsion we should not think about it as a devil, _3afreet_ We should translate things not with the exact translation. One of my issues that I find it really wiered is to use word to word translation, rather than "meaning" translation. I belive we should covey the right meaning and not to stop and what is the right word for X. That's my take on this. So khedma is an acceptable translation here for this.
