If it's not yet clear, here is a more detailed explanation addressing the basic Arabic ligatures which are composed of the letter Lam followed logically by the letter Alef (or variants of Alef like Alef with Hamza above or Alef with Madda above). When a Lam is followed by an Alef, the two characters must be processed logically like two characters, although they are visualized with one glyph. If the current position is before the Lam and the user presses Delete, the Lam will be deleted and the Lamalef glyph will be replaced by an Alef glyph. If the current position is after the Alef and the user presses Backspace, the Alef will be deleted and the Lamalef glyph will be replaced by a Lam glyph. Visually, the Lamalef glyph must be processed like two glyphs with no space between. The cursor may appear before the Lamalef, after the Lamalef, or in the middle of the Lamalef. When the cursor appears in the middle of the Lamalef, the current position in the logical buffer is between Lam and Alef. If the cursor is before the Lamalef and the user presses left arrow, the cursor will appear in the middle of the Lamalef. If the user presses left arrow again, the cursor will appear after the Lamalef. If the cursor is after the Lamalef and the user presses right arrow, the cursor will appear in the middle of the Lamalef. If the user presses right arrow again, the cursor will appear before the Lamalef. It is possible to position the cursor in the middle of a Lamalef using the mouse, or up/down arrows, or PageUp/PageDown. It is possible to select only the right part or only the left part of the Lamalef glyph, either using arrow keys or the mouse. The right part corresponds to selection of the Lam; the left part corresponds to selection of the Alef. Note: a good implementation of these requirements for Arabic ligatures can be seen in Notepad under Arabic Windows NT4, or Windows 2000. It is good to know that when the keyboard language is Arabic, the "G" key generates a Lam, the "H" key generates an Alef, and the "B" key generates Lam followed by Alef. Hope this is more clear now. -- Munzir Taha PGP Key available gpg --recv-keys --keyserver www.mandrakesecure.net F0671821 Telecommunications and Electronics Engineer Mandrake Club Member Maintainer of the OpenBugs project page at http://www.arabic-fedora.org/munzir/OpenBugs.html Maintainer of Fedora Arabic Translation Project https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-ar CIW Designer, ICDL, MOUS, Linux+, LPI 101 New Horizons CLC, Riyadh, SA From sherif at redhat.com Thu Apr 7 17:22:07 2005 From: sherif at redhat.com (Sherif Abdelgawad) Date: Thu, 7 Apr 2005 13:22:07 -0400 Subject: [Fedora-trans-ar] Translation? Hi Lars, I checked this issue again but can't still understand why AlignAuto is removed! What AlignAuto should do is to align the paragraph according to the language written like the case in GTK+ (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70451); not depending on the widget direction. Now I can even say that Qt handling of fonts is very buggy. I checked with your demos/textedit/textedit: Arabic Transparent: doesn't show letters at all or show them broken Diwani Letter: shows gaps and spacing between the letters Hesham Gornata and hundereds of my fonts: are not even considered as fonts; they change nothing. You can test with Hesham Gornata from: http://www.arabic-fedora.org/munzir/hgornata.ttf The first two fonts are well-known from MS Office. -- Munzir Taha PGP Key available gpg --recv-keys --keyserver www.mandrakesecure.net F0671821 Telecommunications and Electronics Engineer Mandrake Club Member Maintainer of the OpenBugs project page at http://www.arabic-fedora.org/munzir/OpenBugs.html Maintainer of Fedora Arabic Translation Project https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-ar Master CIW Designer, ICDL, MOUS, Linux+, LPI 101 New Horizons CLC, Riyadh, SA From lars at trolltech.com Wed Apr 27 08:49:27 2005 From: lars at trolltech.com (Lars Knoll) Date: Wed, 27 Apr 2005 10:49:27 +0200 Subject: [Fedora-trans-ar] Re: Arabic issue #29: Some Arabic fonts doesn't display any character in Qt In-Reply-To: <200504270008.13648.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> References: <200503100731.06709.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> <200504270008.13648.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> Message-ID: <200504271049.28541.lars@trolltech.com> Hi Munzir, On Tuesday 26 April 2005 23:08, Munzir Taha wrote: > On Yaum al-Khamees 29 Muharram 1426 07:31, Munzir Taha wrote: > > Qt 4.0.0-b2-snapshot-20050308 > > System: Linux 2.6.10-1mdk i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ > > GNU/Linux > > > > CODE: > > QApplication::setFont(QFont("Arabic Transparent", 72)); > > QTextEdit *text = new QTextEdit(trUtf8("??")); > > > > DESCRIPTION: > > Nothing is displayed in QTextEdit though two characters are passed to the > > constructor. > > Now I can even say that Qt handling of fonts is very buggy. That font is broken. It doesn't support Unicode at least. Try "ftview -e unic -f 1536 24 hgornata.ttf". This shows you the unicode character map of the font starting at U+0600 (the arabic range). You'll see that the font does not contain any arabic glyphs in this range. I held my breath for two snapshots by now, $ qmake --version Qmake version: 2.00a (Qt 4.0.0-rc1-snapshot-20050429) $ uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.10-1mdk #1 Fri Jan 14 14:31:03 CET 2005 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ unknown GNU/Linux The problems are still the same and nothing changed for me. > > Arabic Transparent: doesn't show letters at all or show them broken > > Diwani Letter: shows gaps and spacing between the letters > > Both work fine for me (after my last fix even at large sizes). I like that "for me". Now how can I help you to make it work fine for me? I tested with MS WordPad and MS Word 2003 and they all just work. Still I feel you are right in not supporting non-Unicode compliant fonts. -- Munzir Taha PGP Key available gpg --recv-keys --keyserver www.mandrakesecure.net F0671821 Telecommunications and Electronics Engineer Mandrake Club Member Maintainer of the OpenBugs project page at http://www.arabic-fedora.org/munzir/OpenBugs.html Maintainer of Fedora Arabic Translation Project https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-ar Master CIW Designer, ICDL, MOUS, Linux+, LPI 101 New Horizons CLC, Riyadh, SA From munzirtaha at newhorizons.com.sa Fri Apr 29 21:22:42 2005 From: munzirtaha at newhorizons.com.sa (Munzir Taha) Date: Sat, 30 Apr 2005 00:22:42 +0300 Subject: [Fedora-trans-ar] Arabic issue #37: GSUB tables don't work properly for Arabic fonts Message-ID: <200504300022.42859.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> Hi Cuters, System: 2.6.10-1mdk i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ GNU/Linux Qt 4.0.0-rc1-snapshot-20050429 Glyph Substitution Table (GSUB) provides information used to substitute glyphs according to the script and language system currently used.
