Message-ID: <200503030113.21490.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> The image of the pointing arrow needs to always be reversed in QFileDialog::getExistingDirectory(), ::getOpenFileName(s)() and ::getSaveFileName() when the layout direction is reversed. I believe Qt should implement this on the API and attach it to the reverse situation. Now the left and right arrows on applications/dialogs/widgets should be swapped when dealing with a right-to-left language. We need to always do it as follows as mentioned by blanchette's book: if (QApplication::reverseLayout()) { backAct->setIconSet(forwardIcon); forwardAct->setIconSet(backIcon); } else { backAct->setIconSet(backIcon); forwardAct->setIconSet(forwardIcon); } Is it too expensive if I ask for this to be somehow on the API? -- Munzir Taha PGP Key available gpg --recv-keys --keyserver www.mandrakesecure.net F0671821 Telecommunications and Electronics Engineer Mandrake Club Member Maintainer of the OpenBugs Wiki page at http://arabic-fedora.org/ Maintainer of Fedora Arabic Translation Project https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-ar CIW Designer, ICDL, MOUS, Linux+, LPI 101 New Horizons CLC, Riyadh, SA From munzirtaha at newhorizons.com.sa Wed Mar 2 22:48:03 2005 From: munzirtaha at newhorizons.com.sa (Munzir Taha) Date: Thu, 3 Mar 2005 01:48:03 +0300 Subject: [Fedora-trans-ar] Arabic issue #22: qTextEdit->setAlignment(Qt::AlignRight) problems. Message-ID: <200503030148.03670.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> With Qt::AlignRigth the text is aligned to the right but whenver I press space while typing Arabic the cursor jumps every time to the begining of the line and again to the correct position when a letter is typed. This is very distracting. If more than one space is pressed the cursor would go out of the window and hence can't even be seen. Tabs in the beginning of the line doesn't show and in the middle of a text push go in the wrong direction! Another more serious issue happen when I type 1-2 ARABIC (that's 1 first then a dash then 2 then ARABIC letters) like the case in outline numbering at the beginning of a paragraph it displays as ARABIC 1-2 (that's beginning from the right 2 then a dash then 1 then the ARABIC) instead of ARABIC 2-1 so though I mean section 1 subsection 2, it will be read section 2 subsection 1! Well it does, and it should work fine for fonts that have open type positioning tables. For fonts that don't have positioning tables we actually do the work ourselves, and this positioning in Qt had a bug I fixed today. To have a non-arabic-aware application among arabic-aware apps is like having non-translated apps among fully arabized ones. Both situations reflect that inconsistency and in both situations we need to do it the right way by localizing the first and the translating the second to gain consistency. Or else, we shouldn't translate any app so as to get that consistency. > Or imagine if your application is mostly arabic, but contains some > left-to-right subwidgets. No. This would break a huge amount of code out there. Qt's coordinate system doesn't change when the layout direction changes. If we did so, you could be sure that almost everything would break and no application developer would manage to write apps that work both LTR and RTL. The solution to this is to not hardcode geometries of subwidgets but use layouts which do all the work for you. If you hardcode the position you get what you ask for. What's the default language of e.g. Tahoma, that support all of Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew and maybe 3 or 4 others? This is the reason why we didn't go that way. This is exactly what I am asking for if it would work properly. > The writing system enum also limits the fonts > to those that can display. So if you set the writing system to "arabic" you > are guaranteed that all the fonts you get in the family list support > arabic. Really? Let's see... I choose Arabic and some of the fonts displayed are guaranteed _not_ to support Arabic like Courier 10 Pitch and Bitstream Charter (displays only English letters in the sample), Clearlyu Pua (display squares). Even Fonts that surely contain Arabic letters like Lucidabright and Lucidatypewriter displays squares on the sample. I also choose Cyrillic and the fonts displayed are Traditional Arabic, KacstBook, KacstTitle, Kacst..., Diwani Letter, Diwani Outline, Diwani... which are also guaranteed _not_ to have a single Cyrillic glyph. Another issue happen when I choose 72 for the font size. The sample simply go to the right and disappear! It should center itself or actually you should center it ;) Yet another issue is the Arabic letters choosen for the Sample. They are random letters. The best letters for this are ???? for many convincing reasons. Please change this. And stil yet another issue or actually a wish list is to have an option of overline in the effects. This is really needed in Arabic since this corresponds to underline in English. > What QFontDialog should probably do is to pick the initially selected > writing system according to the systems locale. Does this imply that there is a way to do it in MS Windows? How? Matthias, you know better for sure but all I am asking for is to deal with RTL and LTR adequately. Isn't setGeometry a function of Qt or is it related to X11? I can now do: QTextEdit *text = new QTextEdit; text->setGeometry(200, 50, 500, 500); // Postive x,y For LTR I want to be able to do something like QTextEdit *text = new QTextEdit; text->setGeometry(-200, -50, 500, 500); // Negative x,y for RTL or something along this line. If it can be done _via Qt_ for LTR why not for RTL? Finally, it's also mentioned that: "If a QLocale object is constructed with the default constructor, it will use the default locale's settings" I thought the default locale should be that stored on LC_ALL, but calling LC_ALL=xx ./myapp seems to ignore it, am I missing something? -- Munzir Taha PGP Key available gpg --recv-keys --keyserver www.mandrakesecure.net F0671821 Telecommunications and Electronics Engineer Mandrake Club Member Maintainer of the OpenBugs project page at http://www.arabic-fedora.org/munzir/OpenBugs.html Maintainer of Fedora Arabic Translation Project https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-ar CIW Designer, ICDL, MOUS, Linux+, LPI 101 New Horizons CLC, Riyadh, SA From munzirtaha at newhorizons.com.sa Fri Mar 25 15:29:06 2005 From: munzirtaha at newhorizons.com.sa (Munzir Taha) Date: Fri, 25 Mar 2005 18:29:06 +0300 Subject: [Fedora-trans-ar] arabic-fedora.org on Orbit TV channel In-Reply-To: <003201c5301d$2da6ad10$1e3210ac@thinkpad> References: <200503222351.50924.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> <200503231525.54462.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> <003201c5301d$2da6ad10$1e3210ac@thinkpad> Message-ID: <200503251829.06871.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> On Thursday 24 March 2005 05:57, Sherif Abdelgawad wrote: > Munzir, > Nice seeing you :) It is good to put the names on faces , > and I think it was first a good chance so we can all see you. > It was really good to know that Linux is finding its way to > the media in Middle East. > > You did great as usual , I personally would like to thank > you for all your efforts in translation and for your great interview. There is also another nice option to show/hide diacritics. > Besides accents and > umlauts are not separate glyphs, they are part of glyphs such as '?' or > '?' in fonts with European characters. Ah! Then forget about accent and umlauts. In Arabic they are separate glyphs and they are just few. It's also worth mentioning that for Arabic language this feature is really valuable. The Arabic text is correct with or without diacritics. For some applications you need to have it appear, in others it's better to hide them. I am not asking for this to be in 4.0 but I do like to help Qt be the best API ever if this won't do harm to its philosophy. > It means lots of work to render > them separately (I don't know if it can even be achieved in a portable > manner) and I don't think it's worth the pain. You are surely understands better but let me tell you something. In Arabic the diacritics are just 8 and they have their own codepoints: 064B ARABIC FATHATAN 064C ARABIC DAMMATAN 064D ARABIC KASRATAN 064E ARABIC FATHA 064F ARABIC DAMMA 0650 ARABIC KASRA 0651 ARABIC SHADDA 0652 ARABIC SUKUN So I guess it should be very easy to make a function that would set them a different color, no? -- Munzir Taha PGP Key available gpg --recv-keys --keyserver www.mandrakesecure.net F0671821 Telecommunications and Electronics Engineer Mandrake Club Member Maintainer of the OpenBugs project page at http://www.arabic-fedora.org/munzir/OpenBugs.html Maintainer of Fedora Arabic Translation Project https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-ar CIW Designer, ICDL, MOUS, Linux+, LPI 101 New Horizons CLC, Riyadh, SA From munzirtaha at newhorizons.com.sa Mon Mar 28 18:46:53 2005 From: munzirtaha at newhorizons.com.sa (Munzir Taha) Date: Mon, 28 Mar 2005 21:46:53 +0300 Subject: [Fedora-trans-ar] Re: Arabic issue #35: A request for an addition of a setDiacriticsColor slot In-Reply-To: <200503281334.17110.faure@kde.org> References: <200503262244.50448.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> <200503271832.23086.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> <200503281334.17110.faure@kde.org> Message-ID: <200503282146.53250.munzirtaha@newhorizons.com.sa> On Monday 28 March 2005 14:34, David Faure wrote: > On Sunday 27 March 2005 17:32, Munzir Taha wrote: > > On Sunday 27 March 2005 16:46, Dimitri wrote: > > > Hi, > > > > > > > void QTextEdit::setDiacriticsColor ( const QColor & c ) [slot] > > > > > > > I can only test with my Office 2003 now since it's handy.
