Normally the console can show 256 different glyphs at the same time. With a kernel hack some time ago, this was raised to 512 (in this mode you have no blinking, inverse and other attributes like that). The font format has a file extension of .psfu. The 'u' means that the file has information about the Unicode code of each characters. Thus, would can edit those files and add what characters you deem appropriate for your users. By default most distros (RedHat, Fedora, ..?) set the console mode to 512 characters (run "showconsolefont" on the console, or try "showfont" for a bit older distros) and they accomodate the following languages: - Latin based - Arabic - Cyrillic - Hebrew For more on console fonts, check out the 'kbd' package. When your system boots up, it runs /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit which invokes /sbin/setsysfont (script) and loads the proper font. You must not change these files; you have to set the console font name in /etc/sysconfig/i18n (initially manually, then from the installation program!) If there is no Punjabi console font in /lib/kbd/consolefonts, you can make one using any fixed-size font (for example, TTF). Search the Internet for those details. This is the soft way to enable Punjabi fonts "soon". I think you can get fonts in the kernel as mentioned by Gertjan but this requires prompt action and then patience :) Good luck, Simos Xenitellis http://simos.info/ From fed19 at xs4all.nl Thu Apr 1 04:07:51 2004 From: fed19 at xs4all.nl (Gertjan Vinkesteijn) Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2004 06:07:51 +0200 Subject: Console Fonts In-Reply-To: <1080793904.3961.34.camel@kl.asia.com> References: <406B4CCD.5090006@netscape.net> <1080793904.3961.34.camel@kl.asia.com> Message-ID: <406B9597.7010009@xs4all.nl> Simos Xenitellis wrote: >... >This is the soft way to enable Punjabi fonts "soon". Even the teachers put "Good luck" at the end of the exam questions and they did not do it in an ironic way (well, in some exams...). There is some time between the inclusion of the fonts in the kernel and actually the specific kernel being used by distros like Fedora. Trying to maintain a custom kernel may put to much work on the volunteers doing the Fedora localisation. The natural way is to schedule for inclusion in the kernel and way for things to propagate. If you have the resources, go for a custom kernel. In addition, a position I see in open-source software is to maintain private patches and not getting exposed to the international community by submitting to the maintainer of the package and understanding any propagation delays downstream. simos From fed19 at xs4all.nl Thu Apr 1 04:40:16 2004 From: fed19 at xs4all.nl (Gertjan Vinkesteijn) Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2004 06:40:16 +0200 Subject: Console Fonts In-Reply-To: <1080797193.3961.54.camel@kl.asia.com> References: <406B4CCD.5090006@netscape.net> <1080793904.3961.34.camel@kl.asia.com> <406B9597.7010009@xs4all.nl> <1080797193.3961.54.camel@kl.asia.com> Message-ID: <406B9D30.3040708@xs4all.nl> Simos Xenitellis wrote: >On Thu, 2004-04-01 at 12:07, Gertjan Vinkesteijn wrote: > > >>Simos Xenitellis wrote: >> >> >> >>>... >>>This is the soft way to enable Punjabi fonts "soon". Then the 19th April is the translation build freeze. What's the difference between them? Is that no translations done _after_ the 9th of April will be included in FC 2 final release? Will the translation build freeze assure that _all_ translations done (to that date) are included in FC 2? Or the translators still have to bug the maintainers so they will include them? For the Red Hat guys and girls: I reported a bug (19525) because my language is not included in anaconda installer. It seems that 'cvs update -Pd' has a problem with aliased directories (I have already faced that with Mandrake's CVS :-). You need to checkout the entire module (like you did) or under translate/ this would have worked too (that's what I did last week): $ cvs co -d system-switch-mail system-switch-mail/po which will create a directory system-switch-mail/ under translate/ with only the corresponding POs. Because this list seems to be a good place to get some attention to important bug reports, I would like to point out this bug report of mine: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=119579 At least SEVEN languages are not included in the help screens of Anaconda. This is an important thing to fix, otherwise the help screens will be in English although the selected installation language is something else. For translations to be shown in anaconda, I need the following: 1) Confirmation that we ship a working font to display the language in X. If it's a language with all new glyphs (which I believe Bengali is), then I need to know what package the font comes from and which font to use so that it will actually display in the installer 2) The following information for the lang-table * console keyboard map to use * default time zone (eg, America/New York) * console font to use * default locale * keyboard mapping to use in X And this information needs to be in bugzilla so that I don't lose track of it. I used to track all of this information down myself, but I just don't have the time to do so anymore. :( Jeremy From baldrick at terra.es Thu Apr 8 04:00:39 2004 From: baldrick at terra.es (Josep Puigdemont) Date: Thu, 08 Apr 2004 06:00:39 +0200 Subject: 'punching nameserver' Message-ID: <1081396839.24182.175.camel@deimos> Hi, from the initscripts module, there's a hard to translate string (for me): #: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-post:83 msgid "punching nameserver $nameserver through the firewall" msgstr "" The problem is the meaning of "punch (to)" in this sentence, any hints? Also, as of now, the language list for installation in FC2 should be considered frozen. The following languages are included: Bengali Catalan Chinese(Simplified) Chinese(Traditional) Croatian Czech Danish Dutch English Estonian Farsi Finnish French German Hungarian Icelandic Italian Japanese Korean Malay Norwegian Portuguese(Brazilian) Portuguese Russian Slovenian Spanish Swedish Turkish Ukrainian Welsh Zulu The following languages seem to have sufficient translations (or are very close) but are not included due to the lack of a suitable font in Fedora Core. If you know of a font for one of these languages that is under a suitable license for distribution with Fedora Core, it would be good to work on getting that into FC3 (it's never to early for the bug report asking for it filed against distribution :) Hindi Punjabi Tamil Vietnamese Jeremy From sharuzzaman at myrealbox.com Thu Apr 15 06:20:08 2004 From: sharuzzaman at myrealbox.com (Sharuzzaman Ahmat Raslan) Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2004 14:20:08 +0800 Subject: Status for system-switch-mail for Malay not updated In-Reply-To: <407DEA03.8060201@redhat.com> References: <407246BD.5080305@redhat.com> <407DE7E5.8000300@myrealbox.com> <407DEA03.8060201@redhat.com> Message-ID: <407E2998.20406@myrealbox.com> Bernd Groh wrote: > I've just checked, and it's not in the CVS. Translations like "real code" software :) are also subject to bugs and can be improved. It would be realy nice if red hat build environment automaticly included ther newest translation when building a package. This way translations updates could make it into distribution even when a package rebuild only contains a bug-fix. Current translations for Slovenian were made with KBabel and without testing them with their matching FC2test2 tools. It would be a shame if fixes after these translations get some serious use and bug-reports, won't be able to make it into FC2 distribution. -- best regards, Rok Pape? Whoops. Sorry about that. I've updated what's in CVS now (which fuzzied the translations that have already been done). Hopefully this won't cause too many problems for people. Jeremy PS Thanks to everyone who has already updated with the changes from last night, too. I really didn't intend to invalidate things again, but this seems important enough to be worth it. Please visit http://fedora.redhat.com/projects/translations/ and click at the "sign up page" link. On the sign up page, fill in the blank spaces with information and submit. Project maintainer will contact you regarding your registration. If everything is OK, your username and SSH key will be added to the translation CVS server. After that, you can checkout the module that you need to start translating. The module is named "translate". The command that you must perform before checking out is as below: # export CVS_RSH=ssh # export CVSROOT=:ext:@elvis.redhat.com:/usr/local/CVS then you can checkout by issuing command: # cvs checkout translate depending on the speed of your Internet connection, you may have to wait for a few minutes until it finish checking out all the files After finish checking out the files, you can start translating the pot files into Bosnian language using your favourite tools. I hope you know how to add, commit and update to the CVS. If not, feel free to ask here, and we will point you to the appropriate direction. Happy translating! :) p/s: To maintainers, can some of the information in this email like the name of the translation module and CVSROOT setting be put on the Translation Project page, so that other people can access it easily. Hopefully it will make the project more "translator friendly" :) ----- Sharuzzaman Ahmat Raslan Malay Translator Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia From nghvinh2k at yahoo.com Thu Apr 15 16:39:37 2004 From: nghvinh2k at yahoo.com (Nguyen Huu Vinh) Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2004 09:39:37 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Error with Anaconda. Please help. Have a look through the archives on how to get a cvs account (if you don't have one already) and how to checkout the files from cvs. If you browse through the directory structure, you will find files with the name bs.po, these are the Bosnian translations. If there is no bs.po file, you will find a .pot file in that directory which you can use as base. The easiest way is to simply copy the .pot to bs.po and then you can start work. You should be able to add the file in these cases with `cvs add`, if you're not, let me know, and I'll add it for you. Although all the Language names on the language selection screen are English only, as are the names of services to be allowed through the firewall, and the "Drive /dev/* Model:" line at the top of the Disk/Partitioning screen, but this seems to be true for all the languages, so I guess this is just due to the test nature of the build? They suck :(. Apart from that there are Gtk+ problems, the most important is that the font used is awful. It's a Pakistani font that looks awful for Persian/Iranian. We really don't have a Persian font in Fedora yet. I was supposed to request a package for that, but the fonts that I was supposed to package are not yet ready. So, as I don't think we can make any change in this step, the Persian option is going to be something broken in this release :(. Hopefully we will make it better for FC3... behdad On Mon, 19 Apr 2004, Jeremy Katz wrote: > I got a quick run of anaconda going to take some screenshots of some > things in all languages (at least enough screens to get a basic idea of > how things look). If it does not already exist someone will also have to generate a locale description, which is a bit more complex but requires knowledge rather than special tools. IMHO it also helps to have - An "official" master list of words for things like Preferences, Options, Configure.., Save As .. etc - At least one person with very strong language skills as editor/overseer to get consistency and style. For some languages the bigger problem may be fonts. Several translation groups have things like indexes of phrases, status pages and other web tools you could also adapt. Actually, Guy Veraghert found a real bug in the original English: There is an almost excact double sentence in the help screen. Appearing right after oneanother: You can also scroll through the available list and choose a time zone. You can also scroll through the city list and choose your desired time zone. I'll bugzilla this the day after tomorrow unless someone beats me to it. Thanks Tino. This Marathi version should be useful for 50% of maharashtrians who don?t know English script & can only write & speak Marathi. Intentionally I neither referred to dictionary nor consulted professors of Marathi literature. I have not translated the words in literal sense; but described the action, the command in question performs. Marathi in Maharashtra is not homogenous either. Varhadi, Khandeshi, Konkani, Vidarbhi, Marathwadi are its different variations. But commonly used words are used here. I am trying to exchange Pundit?s word with those of Bolibhasha. Further Thesaurus, synonyms, spell check is also equally important Please give me a chance to contribute there also. Waiting for your reply. Please do mail me.
