Fedora Project has the objective to use and contribute with upstream. For instance, we use the upstream GNOME translation and with Transifex we can submit translations to upstream projects like Packagekit and Avahi. I do not have anything particular atm, however have some findings regarding Damn Lies. Some of you may already know well but it might be good to share the status among all translators. Any input welcome. [Status] o Most of the statistics shown in Damned Lies are really for 'rawhide', even though they show up as 'fedora 8' or 'fedora 9'. o Having a look at the configuration file [1], only a few modules have configured different branches than HEAD/ tip/master/trunk which is the main development branch, and most probably what will go into F10. o No one working directly on Damned Lies instance atm. [We may need to do] 1) Figure out what modules goes into each release 2) For each module, figure out what branch goes into each release [1] http://translate.fedoraproject.org/releases.xml.in noriko > > -d > > From b.rahul.pm at gmail.com Tue Aug 12 13:47:24 2008 From: b.rahul.pm at gmail.com (Rahul Bhalerao) Date: Tue, 12 Aug 2008 19:17:24 +0530 Subject: Problem enabling new language on gdm language selection list Message-ID: For adding a language on gdm's login screen, apart from having a locale file, few translations and required fonts, it is required that language is recognized by fontconfig. To make a fontconfig recognize the language, a related lang.orth file is required. With my experiment on this, I think there is also need to add an entry to fcfreetype.c of fontconfig and related language code entry in ttnameid.h of freetype2. After making all these changes the language is listed in the gdm's list. But this has a problem, as the entries of language code in ttnameid.h are MS and MAC codes for these languages and there are languages that do not have these codes but are included in iso639-2 language codes. Thus my question is, how much important is it to have an entry for the language in the file fcfreetype.c of fontconfig and related entry in the header file ttnameid.h of freetype2? And what is to be done for the language that does not have MS or MAC code? Is it possible to use our own codes? Ray (who wrote most of this code) is busy doing something else right now, so let me summarize what I know about this: What gdm does it is only shows a language in the list if a) we have translations for it and b) we have fonts for it. For b), we basically ask fontconfig "do you have fonts for this language ?". It seems that fontconfig says "no" if it doesn't know the language. It would be better if fontconfig could say "I don't know" in that case... That makes no sense. The only thing those values are used for is to extract localized family and style names from font files. Those values are defined by MS and can't be free extended. And your fonts needs to use it for them to have any effect at all. > Rahul. behdad From goeran at uddeborg.se Fri Aug 15 21:26:22 2008 From: goeran at uddeborg.se (=?utf-8?Q?G=C3=B6ran?= Uddeborg) Date: Fri, 15 Aug 2008 23:26:22 +0200 Subject: Problem submitting new translations Message-ID: <18597.62590.489902.216598@freddi.uddeborg> I have tried to submit a new translation for a couple of days now, but when I come to https://translate.fedoraproject.org/submit/module/ I always get a "Service Temporarily Unavailable". Is there someway of automatically knowing if it is up or down on a > daily basis without having to upload first? - Mike Short answer: No. The infrastructure team gets notified if the application is not responding through the regular monitoring systems. But the application being up and running does not mean that all is ok within the application. (If something goes wrong, the poor sucker experiencing this would have to notify the maintainers. The maintainers can then look at a log file that may or may not give a hint to where the problem is). cheers, asgeir From noriko at redhat.com Thu Aug 28 04:18:24 2008 From: noriko at redhat.com (Noriko Mizumoto) Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 14:18:24 +1000 Subject: Transifex and Damn Lies In-Reply-To: <200808281356.09290.asgeirf@redhat.com> References: <1551234084.1349371219894698636.JavaMail.root@zmail01.collab.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com> <200808281356.09290.asgeirf@redhat.com> Message-ID: <48B62710.1030906@redhat.com> Asgeir Frimannsson ????????: > On Thursday 28 August 2008 13:38:18 Michael Hideo-Smith wrote: >> ----- "Asgeir Frimannsson" wrote: >>> From: "Asgeir Frimannsson" >>> To: "Michael Hideo-Smith" , "Fedora Translation >>> Project List" Sent: Thursday, August 28, >>> 2008 11:45:59 AM GMT +10:00 Brisbane >>> Subject: Re: Transifex and Damn Lies >>> >>> Yes, submissions through transifex is working. >> Great. From non-techy translator perspective, it seems a bit of risk relying on translators to run 'msgfmt' for integrity just before every commit. Some (or maybe 'many'?) translators may easily forget to do so. It would be safer to submit at Bugzilla manually till it fix. just my 2cents noriko > > cheers, > asgeir > > > > > -- > Fedora-trans-list mailing list > Fedora-trans-list at redhat.com > https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-list From igorsoares at gmail.com Thu Aug 28 04:44:53 2008 From: igorsoares at gmail.com (Igor Pires Soares) Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 01:44:53 -0300 Subject: Transifex and Damn Lies In-Reply-To: <75db4b7e0808271845t542b38bao79d8bdebb3a8a0b4@mail.gmail.com> References: <6d4237680808271752m2dbd11c8j1c7990003f52ee8f@mail.gmail.com> <1114468417.1344101219887673628.JavaMail.root@zmail01.collab.prod.int.phx2.redhat.com> <75db4b7e0808271845t542b38bao79d8bdebb3a8a0b4@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <1219898693.8266.10.camel@amd5600> Em Qui, 2008-08-28 ?s 11:45 +1000, Asgeir Frimannsson escreveu: > On Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 11:41 AM, Michael Hideo-Smith > wrote: > > ----- "Dimitris Glezos" wrote: > > > From: "Dimitris Glezos" > > To: "Fedora Translation Project List" > > > > Sent: Thursday, August 28, 2008 10:52:57 AM GMT +10:00 > Brisbane > > Subject: Re: Transifex and Damn Lies > > > > On Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 3:31 AM, Noriko Mizumoto > > > wrote: > > > Hi translators! > > > > > > We have been experiencing some maintenance on TX and DL. > > > No need to mention as everyone knows, tremendous effort is > on it's > > way. > > > > > > The question may come up in mind, 'then what to do? Fill 'subject' and 'comment' 6. Submit as new bug 7. Go back to that bug, and click 'Add an attachment' at Attachment section 8. Click 'browse' button and locate your file 9. Fill 'description' 10. Please confirm. - Mike Right, this plan B is the 'traditional' way in open source to send patches/contributions from people with no commit access to the source. Transifex is just a tool that added a more efficient plan A when we noticed that a lot of Fedora modules were being hosted on non-CVS systems. So, when we're having issues (like for example when a project isn't registered on Tx, or its setup isn't working or the translator is simply a non-Fedora one), we fall back to the regular way of doing things: bug reports. A plan C could be to upload files to a specific location where all translators have access to (eg. on cvs.fedoraproject.org:/cvs/l10n). Then the developer can be notified with a bug report to pick up his files just prior of packaging for a release. -d -- Dimitris Glezos Jabber ID: glezos at jabber.org, GPG: 0xA5A04C3B http://dimitris.glezos.com/ "He who gives up functionality for ease of use loses both and deserves neither." Judging from the originals, msgid "%d of %d optional package selected" msgid_plural "%d of %d optional packages selected" I would assume it is the second, not the first number which influences the choice. There is a problem here, and it is not restricted to Slavic languages. It is a problem for Swedish (a Germanic language) too. "Selected" should be translated in different ways depending on the first number. > I would like to file a BZ request for this to be broken up in two > parts and used recursively, as in: > > msgid_plural "%d optional packages" > > #. It's dangerous to compose sentences like that. More often than not, it breaks for some languages. I don't personally know a language it would break in, and it would solve the problem in Swedish too. But I'm still a bit afraid of it. Unfortunately, the po format isn't made to cope with sentences with more than one singular/plural distinction. So I don't have any better suggestion than yours. I just wanted to warn about it. Here's one: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279671 And another one more recent and somewhat different: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=433552 This time a person from Debian without commit access (actually, without access to Transifex) attached a file on a bug report and a person with commit access (through Transifex!) went on to submit it. -d -- Dimitris Glezos Jabber ID: glezos at jabber.org, GPG: 0xA5A04C3B http://dimitris.glezos.com/ "He who gives up functionality for ease of use loses both and deserves neither."
