From tombo at adamantio.net Fri Jan 4 09:52:10 2008 From: tombo at adamantio.net (Francesco Tombolini) Date: Fri, 04 Jan 2008 10:52:10 +0100 Subject: Request of clarification about software translation Message-ID: <477E01CA.80703@adamantio.net> While translating some software I saw that the chkconfig page (http://translate.fedoraproject.org/module/chkconfig) shows that it.po is translated at 98% (87/1/0), so I decided to fix this. The "submit module" of transifex is not actually configured to accept contributions. So I think to work via cvs server, but the file contained in the cvs server (cvs.fedoraproject.org) is different from the file that I get from the web interface of the module. This happens with other files too, like comps (web) that is different from comps from cvs.fedoraproject.org or from comps-po from i18n.fedoraproject.org. How can I be sure of what to translate? Maybe it's because the web interface auto-generates the POT files for those modules that support intltool, practially ignoring the current POT file? In any case, the web interface should always give a correct PO/POT file for translation, which should be the same as if you taken the source and run an `intltool-update ` (or, for the modules that don't support intltool, `msgmerge `). -d -- Dimitris Glezos Jabber ID: glezos at jabber.org, GPG: 0xA5A04C3B http://dimitris.glezos.com/ "He who gives up functionality for ease of use loses both and deserves neither." I have managed to "cvs add sr at latin.po", "cvs remove sr at Latn.po" and then "cvs commit" successfully to a few modules. However, for some of the modules I had an error on commit as shown in the #323831 report. Chester hasn't managed to commit sr at latin either, so I opened individual module bug reports, and some maintainers managed to do it (e.g. for libuser and usermode), but some not, like Tomas Mraz who ended up making sr.latin.po in authconfig which does not help (#425843). So, I guess what we need is someone with enough CVS knowledge and privileges to fix up the CVS repo and put it in a sane state so either I or the maintainers can commit sr at latin.po, or just do the rest of renaming for us directly. The message in the #323831 report mentions cleaning up the Attic folders, does that make sense? Thanks, Milo? Well, you don't want to do a rename directly in the CVS repo, as that will change spinning older branches for releases that don't use the new locale. add/remove on HEAD should work, though. > So, I guess what we need is someone with enough CVS knowledge and > privileges to fix up the CVS repo and put it in a sane state so either > I or the maintainers can commit sr at latin.po, or just do the rest of > renaming for us directly. I posted the bug about two months ago and nothing has happened since. A couple of us were talking yesterday about setting up a wiki page for packages that are worth translating and those that aren't. We need to keep it in one place to make sure data is current and interoperable with other services. For this reason we better do it on the latter and deprecate the wiki page. ## Additional info: Need to go through the wiki table and add all the information on the Damned Lies XML file, and for those teams which more info are needed, open bug reports and/or send emails for actions needed to be taken or more information requested. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. Awesome. Created bug # 429662 to completely remove the table from that page and redirect to tranlsate.fpo/teams and /wiki/L10N/Maintainer for more info on how to become a maintainer. -d -- Dimitris Glezos Jabber ID: glezos at jabber.org, GPG: 0xA5A04C3B http://dimitris.glezos.com/ "He who gives up functionality for ease of use loses both and deserves neither." We've always left it up to the module maintainers to choose where to host their projects, so we didn't push (too much) people to move off elvis. But since it affects translations so much, we are going to insist in moving everything to Fedora infrastructure soon. A few of us (people from trans, docs, infra, devel) discussed it at FUDCon, and we all think we should initiate another elvis move soon. I'll go on and send an email to the module maintainers in the next few days to schedule a mass move in approximately 3 weeks from now. I reckon there'll be plenty of time to get used to the new home and fix any broken stuff until the feature freeze. Will keep you guys informed. -d -- Dimitris Glezos Jabber ID: glezos at jabber.org, GPG: 0xA5A04C3B http://dimitris.glezos.com/ "He who gives up functionality for ease of use loses both and deserves neither." The main translation list is in something mostly like English. If there is not already and there are several translators you can ask for a specific indonesian translator list and what you speak on that is up to the translation team. Unfortunately it happens on all language pages. This was caused from a person added in `translation-teams.xml.in` but not in `people.xml.in`. The files were tagged as 'LIVE' without someone testing them first on a local install, so the error propagated to our website. Fixed it now, should be live in a few hours. Please, don't tag as 'LIVE' before someone has tested it and gave you a green light. Even better, ask someone to tag it. You need an account in the fedora wiki and membership in the Edit group so you can edit pages (including your personal). Ask somebody you know, or somebody from your country that already has a wiki page to add you to the group. If nothing works I can try and add you (but I've never done so). Greetings, Alexander. Sure it could have been said more politely, but I was too amazed by this idea of talking Bahasa on an international mailing list. Been a mostly fun weekend. Here's a quick recap of what's new: 1. Around 15 bugs were closed the past 2 days, as you might have noticed by some emails arriving on the list. 2. Kannada and Indonesian teams were created and their info were put on the translate.fpo. 3. We now have system-config-network and yumex in Transifex. Here are quick links for their stats. Get these babes to 100%! http://translate.fedoraproject.org/module/yumex http://translate.fedoraproject.org/module/system-config-network [1] 4. translate.fpo is now available in Italian and Greek 5. The single FAQ page we were talking yesterday was created, and the website questions were moved there. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N/FAQ 6. Together with Bart, we moved all content from wiki/L10N/Teams over to translate.fpo. 7. I assume this is a new translator introduction, since someone else already said welcome. If that's the case, then welcome from me as well. But in the future, could you please use English when posting to this list. There's a lot of people on this list speaking dozens of languages and if everyone used their native language, then most people wouldn't be able to understand each other. If I'm not mistaken, what you wrote was French. I don't see a French mailing list on the Red Hat server at , but I believe it's possible for the French translators to get one if there's at least three people in the team. I have added some agenda items relating to the infrastructure (damned lies + transifex). Dimitris & others have done a tremendous amount of work getting it all up and running, as well as documenting it on the wiki. Fedora 9 String freeze is getting closer, so let's make sure we are all on the same page and make as much use of the improved features as possible. When moving an {hg, git} module from a system to another, we need to delete it from the server's disk because its settings are stored in the directory itself (.hg, .git subdirs). We didn't do it with yumex, so it tried to update itself from the older server. I cleared the module's cache and should be OK now. It's a known bug of DL, but often forgotten to be taken care of. Maybe we should consider clearing the cache every few days. The total content of the modules are 3GB, but they are mostly hosted on Fedora servers, so shouldn't be a problem anyway. -d -- Dimitris Glezos Jabber ID: glezos at jabber.org, GPG: 0xA5A04C3B http://dimitris.glezos.com/ "He who gives up functionality for ease of use loses both and deserves neither." Your work with managing the statistics website has been absolutely fantastic, I feel much more confident knowing you keep an eye on those XML files. Thanks. For one, I'll upload somewhere instructions from the last time I setup DL on my laptop. Also, I'll try to get the testing instance on publictest5 up and running and have you given access on that server to test stuff freely. -d > | Please, don't tag as 'LIVE' before someone has tested it and gave you > | a green light.
