However, I am not sure whether the term (Language Support) used over here is correct or not. Because any package or feature of the application included in Fedora have any specific criteria for *support*. The criteria defined on the above URL could be called as a *Language Inclusion Criteria* in terms of I18n and L10n both instead of *Language Support Criteria*. Anyways, FLP team would be happy to define the Language Inclusion Criteria in terms of L10n I think. I could be wrong here, please correct me if I am. Because as far as I know, for Fedora, "Support" means voluntary help from community contributors through mailing lists, forums or IRC. That's it, I think! No specific criteria for it. Because as far as I know, > for Fedora, "Support" means voluntary help from community contributors > through mailing lists, forums or IRC. That's it, I think! No specific > criteria for it. > IMHO, 'inclusion' does not sound an appropriate word here. For example, it would mean that the listed criteria be met even before the inclusion process starts. Whereas the purpose here is to have a reference to check after the inclusion process is completed. The targeted problem here is that, how do we crosscheck if a particular language is actually a part of fedora. The problem with l10n/i18n work is that it is scattered through too many packages and sub-components of the system. This makes it difficult to identify if the language is usable or not on a given system. This also adds ambiguity for developers to make the language go through a _feature's_ process. Since a 'new language' in fedora is a significant achievement for user experience and amount of work for l10n and i18n teams, it makes sense to identify it through the features documentation and even possibly the 'release notes'. Thus, if we propose a new language for a particular release as a feature we have to ensure that a third party (anyone beyond i18n/l10n team) has a set of checkpoints to verify the completeness of the feature. This has been the main reason to document the minimum criteria for support. Now, I agree that the term 'support' may have varied interpretations depending upon the context. For fedora, I think it should mostly be from community perspective. The same term has been used by gnome as well. The objective is not-to-discourage particular activity on a particular language and yet to identify few others that have good status of overall work and usability. This helps developers to set a milestone and users to set expectations. The same could be true for fedora. (We have already used it in past but more vaguely.) This is not proposed as a criteria for 'commercial' support, but I think the same can be derived on similar lines if needed. All additional comments should be made in the comments box of this bug report. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=455796 Summary: Tajik Keyboard Layout (Tajik xkb - tj) Product: Fedora Localization Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: low Priority: low Component: Other language AssignedTo: dimitris at glezos.com ReportedBy: victor.ibragimov at gmail.com QAContact: aalam at redhat.com CC: fedora-trans-list at redhat.com Description of problem: There is an official Tajik Standard Keyboard Layout required by the TojikStandard Organization to be used in software development. The official keyboard, due to the added 6 characters, does not support important keys such as _-+= as they are replaced by special characters ??? and ??? on Tajik keyboard. For the translators in Linux a Tajik keyboard was developed to match the Russian layout and have all the keys available on the keyboard. This unofficial Tajik keyboard layout use more than one buttons to get a letter with a special sign for Tajik language and require two key strokes. The existing Tajik xkb in Fedora is based on unofficial layout. To meet the requirements/needs for both official and unofficial, the following layout has been created to resolve the existing (but permanent) Tajik layout issues. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Change the existing Tajik xkb (tj) Expected results: // 17/07/2008 // ------------------------------------------------------------- // Standard Tojiki Keyboard Layout, Official Standard // ------------------------------------------------------------- // Created by Victor Ibragimov // Tajik Fedora & Software Localization Team // ------------------------------------------------------------- // DUAL INPUT METHOD // -------------------------------------------------------------------- // -------------- Tojiki Official Keyboard Layout---------------------- // -------------------------------------------------------------------- // partial default alphanumeric_keys xkb_symbols "official" { name[Group1]= "Tojikiston - official"; By reading that document (http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Deployment_Guide/) I see Fedora 9 has many tools and things greatly improved. So the job to build one seems to be not easy. But a guide like this would reduce the time used to search for information to an administrator. We've been asking Red Hat to donate this to the Fedora commons for some time. This is a much bigger issue than it appears at first glance. My personal opinion (with my blue fedora on) is that the Deployment Guide is not much of an asset to Red Hat, since people can essentially get the same documentation around the web (granted, with different levels of quality). It's not as big a value as something like the Cluster or GFS guides, and it requires much less work for the community to maintain with Red Hat as participants, to whatever extent they like. With my red fedora back on, I know that many people have devoted many hours to working on that material. So it's important that they see working with the community on the Deployment Guide as a win, and not a failure. -- Paul W. Thanks for looking into that Noriko -- A few things need to happen to this doc: * Branch for F-9 so people can work on the F-10 version * Publish F-9 Installation Guide content for some other $LANG I'm cc'ing the Docs list so someone can look into this. IMHO, there are two things I think necessary: 1. A module in t.fp.o to translate it. 2. A menu option to access it, possibly under System | Administration or Applications | System tools. It seems to be useful because it has a rollback option, for updates that went wrong, and it is easy to use. kind regards. I'm one of the redactors on the fedora-fr.org wiki, a french speaking website on fedora and a french information source on the project. I also help on the fedora-fr forum and their IRC channel on freenode aswell as the fedora channel on freenode too. I hope I will be able to make myself useful for the project. The problem seems to be a very known issue. The most (or all) modules of Fedora Project don't work properly with intltool. So, to avoid some problems around it, we have refreshed the stats cache. It means that all potfiles were download from theirs respective repositories again. The stats currently *must* reflect the reality. Hopefully it will fix the most of our current problem with the stats system. However I'm still fixing some issues around missing files with entries into po/POFILES.in and po/POTFILES.skip files. Some stats shows 0% when the modules are actually translated. I noticed this problem with the following modules: libuser system-config-httpd pam_krb5 revisor yumex system-switch-mail virt-top Authconfig is also strange, the Brazilian Portuguese translation file is 100% translated, but DL shows some new strings. I guess this due to the differences between the recent changes caught by intltool and the outdated .PO file. We (translators) shouldn't support applications that make our life more difficult. If they're listed in transifex, they should take care of having PO files up to date, and having transifex working correctly. Last months the Catalan team has updated some translations, and 90% of the times I've found that projects either: a) don't update the statistics properly, leading to bug reports (which are not reviewed immediately), b) don't support web interface for submitting, leading to bug reports to send translations c) don't have up-to-date POT files so transifex is great, but projects are not handling it, leading to bug reports for communications, so translations stay on a limbo for some time. This makes translating Fedora uneasy, and certainly unmotivating (at least for me and for other translators). We want QA, we want to show our progress etc. What?! 7? 30 05:33:24 we want to attract people?! 7? 30 05:33:43 cmpahar: 'our progress' sounds nice 7? 30 05:33:53 Hm. 7? 30 05:34:34 I could (also) give one presentation on the Fedora L10n Project per se, showing the progress we've done. I already have some figures and numbers. 7? 30 05:34:56 glezos: that would be great 7? 30 05:35:56 OK. I'll put it on the page, and see how the barcamp goes -- maybe people will be interested in both sessions, maybe not. 7? 30 05:36:10 I think it will mostly interest rpm/developers 7? 30 05:38:06 I like to shoot the question 'what is the status of transifex?' 7? 30 05:38:14 noriko: good Q 7? 30 05:38:32 I released Transifex 0.3 the other days 7? 30 05:38:42 http://groups.google.com/group/transifex-devel/browse_thread/thread/bbf446dd28649892 7? 30 05:39:06 Development is *really* active these days 7? 30 05:39:16 You can check out http://transifex.org/timeline that shows a bunch of development changes 7? 30 05:39:27 And also take a look at our Roadmap: http://transifex.org/roadmap 7? 30 05:39:48 So the current status is that we're stabilizing the development tree and there are 4 people working on it. 7? 30 05:40:33 GNOME is considering adopting it, we're planning on integrating Damned Lies in Tx (upstream agrees on this move) and Stephane, the maintainer of Vertimus is already working in moving it into Tx. 7? 30 05:41:41 great news :) I think I actually went to the transifex.org site for the first time a couple of days ago, that's really nice as well 7? 30 05:42:21 phew! fantastic. congratulation the release of 0.3, glezos 7? 30 05:42:24 vpv: We've put some effort in making it a solid upstream open source project. 7? 30 05:43:11 I'm not sure when we'll be able to update translate.fpo to version 0.3, but the benefits won't be too many (mostly under-the-hood changes) 7? 30 05:43:25 We might want to wait for v0.4 which will hopefully roll out in a month. 7? 30 05:43:32 Now, one of the greatest things I'm working on is a "centralized" instance of Tx, independent of any project, probably at transifex.net 7? 30 05:43:56 It will allow new user registrations, any project hosted anywhere will be able to hook up with it, etc. 7? 30 05:44:01 glezos: what would the centralized instance do? 7? 30 05:44:21 ahh ok 7? 30 05:44:38 do you mean to do something like an openID? 7? 30 05:44:45 runa_b: openID as well. 7? 30 05:44:57 nice :) 7? 30 05:45:06 The vision is to have these Tx instances "talk" to each other, so we can have a global L10n community in a way. 7? 30 05:45:29 Projects like Fedora and GNOME can have their own community, and each Tx instance can "submit" stuff to other instances and wait for approval by the local communities. 7? 30 05:45:52 FWIW, projects like OpenSUSE, Maemo and Mono have shown interest in it as well. 7? 30 05:46:11 Anyone wanting to follow up on News, can monitor http://transifex.org/wiki/News or http://pipes.yahoo.com/transifex/updates. 7? 30 05:46:12 eof. 7? 30 05:47:44 Since we're on the tools subject: Our instance of DL (statistics) is a bit outdated right now.. Piotr has been updating the XML conf files, but my testing sandbox is broken and haven't had time to debug it for a while. 7? 30 05:50:42 glezos: btw, now that Fedora is using Mediawiki, have you heard about the Mediawiki PO translation extension etc. project, which is going on as a part of the Finnish Summer (of) Code of this year? 7? 30 05:51:10 vpv: yeah, I talked about it a bit with the MW guys 7? 30 05:51:33 I didn't have the chance to take a good look at it yet though 7? 30 05:51:52 But it seems promising. The place to ask is probably #mediawiki-i18n 7? 30 05:53:14 Okey, anything else we want to discuss? 7? 30 05:53:55 brain storm = yes one thing 7? 30 05:53:57 glezos: right. I just wanted to make sure that you guys know about each other and so on, maybe the mediawiki stuff could be useful to us at some point... 7? 30 05:54:23 glezos: noriko runa_b : sorry got late, was away from my machine! 7? 30 05:54:40 ankit: no worries.. the meeting is on over here 7? 30 05:54:44 vpv: They definitely could be useful, yeah.. 7? 30 05:54:47 hi ankit 7? 30 05:54:52 hi noriko 7? 30 05:54:56 ankit: welcome 7? 30 05:55:01 glezos: :) 7? 30 05:55:28 ankit: feel free to scroll up and comment on anything you'd like. 7? 30 05:55:30 somewhat and somehow is any way that we can hear more comment on L10n from other translators? 7? 30 05:55:48 welcome ankit 7? 30 05:57:07 noriko: Maybe asking on the mailing list could get more feedback. 7? 30 05:57:24 guys, F10 schedule is up (with translations deadline),,, http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N/Meetings#agenda 7? 30 05:57:27 oops 7? 30 05:57:32 http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/10/Schedule 7? 30 05:57:35 And/or create a wiki page like L10N/Feedback linked in from /L10N.. 7? 30 05:57:46 glezos: I mean more mandatory way :P 7? 30 05:58:17 ankit: Yes, the thing is that String & feature freezes are on the same date. 7? 30 05:59:16 to see how many languages are active and how happy they are, so we can more ppl to be more active. 7? 30 05:59:27 noriko: Maybe a poll could help. 7? 30 05:59:47 Oh, we don't seem to have Rawhide statistics on DL yet, what's the situation there? 7? 30 06:00:22 noriko: I'd say either a poll on a website offering such functionality and send an email to all per-language mailing lists. 7? 30 06:00:49 glezos: k. I will think about that and find some clear vision on it. 7? 30 06:01:43 noriko: a bunch of Qs sent on the list asking for replies might get some constructive feedback as well. 7? 30 06:03:23 vpv: you right... 7? 30 06:03:58 vpv: our DL instance is screwed up. 7? 30 06:04:36 I think I'm the only person having a test instance that can push the changes live.. 7? 30 06:05:50 We did try to recruit a few people from the community, but the whole landscape of our L10n tools is pretty complicated... 7? 30 06:06:30 I've mentioned in a few occasions to RH folks that having a person payed to administrate our L10n infrastructure will greatly help both the community as well as our internal translators 7? 30 06:07:24 AFAIK we don't have someone from RH being responsible for these issues yet. 7? 30 06:08:00 Anyway -- I'll try to find some time in my vacations to work on them. 7? 30 06:10:18 glezos: i thought asgeirf was helping you with some tx issues... 7? 30 06:11:52 ankit: asgeirf is working on the development of Tx, yeah 7? 30 06:12:29 but our L10n infrastructure (servers, Damned Lies configuration, RPMs) definitely need some more love. 7? 30 06:13:09 ah i see 7? 30 06:13:13 At least that's what Bugzilla says.. :/ 7? 30 06:13:32 anyway. Looking at the bright side of life. 7? 30 06:13:33 :) 7? 30 06:13:51 Anything else we need/forgot to discuss before wrapping up? 7? 30 06:14:21 it is good sending singnal for help, it will be picked up soon. 7? 30 06:15:22 i had a doubt about the date decided for "translation deadline" for Fedora 10... 7? 30 06:15:51 is it decided by FLESCo or the release-engineering? 7? 30 06:15:54 any idea ? anyone? 7? 30 06:16:48 good question, I like to know too. I could not pick up any mail in f-t-l asking that to us. 7? 30 06:17:05 noriko: done: http://dimitris.glezos.com/weblog/2008/07/29/l10n-admins-wanted/ 7? 30 06:17:29 ankit: RelEng decides the release dates, I think. 7? 30 06:17:44 ankit: AFAIK they took the same approach we had in the previous release. 7? 30 06:18:25 glezos: was the FLSCo consulted.. since this time we do have a SC? 7? 30 06:19:17 --> hanthana (n=hanthana at 216.18.1.210) has joined #fedora-l10n 7? 30 06:19:19 runa_b: I'm pretty sure a few folks looked at the proposed schedule before final decision, but I don't know about the "official" things (approval stamps etc) 7? 30 06:19:47 glezos: oh ok 7? 30 06:20:19 ankit: Speaking on releases -- have you guys discussed the idea we had, to have Fedora relnotes translated in languages we have internal translators for? 7? 30 06:20:34 glezos: actually, there wasn't any date specified for "Translation freeze" before a week ago, I guess... after i caught it, i sent an e-mail to release-engineering people (John Poelstra and jesse keating) to know about the deadline for translation 7? 30 06:20:55 ankit: ok 7? 30 06:20:57 so, i was expecting them to consult FLSCo, but they did it themselves it seems... 7? 30 06:21:18 guys sorry, i have to go.. happy to see you!! 7? 30 06:21:20 bb 7? 30 06:21:28 anyways, but i truely feel that we/l10n/FLSCo should be consulted to decide dates related to translation freeze 7? 30 06:21:31 bye cmpahar 7? 30 06:21:35 cmpahar: no worries, you can read the logs :) 7? 30 06:21:42 i wil :) 7? 30 06:22:24 ankit: I think we'll need to continue working in raising awareness and being responsible for certain things before things like this happen. 7? 30 06:22:26 so, if we can come up with some plan, we could approach release-engineering officially to decide the date 7? 30 06:22:52 glezos: agree... 7? 30 06:23:03 For what it's worth, I participate on the Release meetings, so at least we have someone representing L10n in the official process. 7? 30 06:23:54 ankit: you could comment on the bug report that we'd like the string freeze date to happen 5 days earlier, and send an email to releng (CCing John Poelstra) asking them to move the date.. 7? 30 06:24:24 <-- cmpahar has quit (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out)) 7? 30 06:24:34 glezos: oh, we do have bug report for this? i didn't know! 7? 30 06:25:21 ankit: https://fedorahosted.org/rel-eng/ticket/105 7? 30 06:25:42 thx glezos 7? 30 06:25:59 right. 7? 30 06:26:14 I think it's getting pretty late in India, let's take any other topics on the list or after the meeting 7? 30 06:26:20 Closing in 30 7? 30 06:26:38 btw, just to update you guys, i got one more thing added into the F10 schedule, that's "Allow Fedora 10 Pre-branch"... 7? 30 06:26:53 which resolves "Branching" issue for us I guess... 7? 30 06:27:13 But, I am not sure, whether all Developers will follow these dates to make the branches for their packages 7? 30 06:27:42 ankit: they won't. 7? 30 06:27:53 so, what I had in my mine while I attended Boston FUDCon is, to inform the developers individually through e-mails about this date and the importans of Branching 7? 30 06:27:56 (just making sure it's pretty clear.:) 7? 30 06:28:05 glezos: i know, but, some of them may 7? 30 06:28:39 ankit: Ideally we could track all these through Transifex.. Each developer adding his own branch automatically. 7? 30 06:28:44 um.. *directly. 7? 30 06:29:38 ah, that's a great idea to find out which package is branched and which one is not 7? 30 06:30:09 ankit: These are the features I'd like to work in the next months. 7? 30 06:30:10 OK 7? 30 06:30:13 Let's wrap up here 7? 30 06:30:21 and continue the discussion later. 7? 30 06:30:23
