My name is Jorge Barrera Grandon, originally from Chile, but currently living in Norway. :) I work at a Norwegian Linux company named Linpro, within Helpdesk, and have been working with Linux for the past 4 years. I'm not much of a programmer (other than PHP), but I have had some previous experience with translation. I spent a few years translating general Linux-documentation from English to Norwegian, and I was also an active participant with DokuWiki a while, also with translation. Having "discovered" Fedora recently, as I've been a Debian-type of guy for a while, I decided that it was time to contribute back to the Open Source community once again. As for communication, I can be reached on this email or on IRC (Freenode), using the nick jbarrera, on the channels #fedora, #fedora-devel and #fedora-l10n. However, I'm very disappointed about the numbers of voters, just 10% of the eligible voted, I think there is a problem. IMO, the election time wasn't the problem, nor the communication on this list. I see only three possible reasons: the electors don't feel concerned by the election (is the FLSCo useless ?), or they don't want to vote for someone unknown, or just few of them read the list frequently. If somebody has some other reasons and how to resolve this issue, I'm interested by it. Pablo From rfcompte at gmail.com Thu May 1 18:25:41 2008 From: rfcompte at gmail.com (Rafael F. Message-ID: <18459.36213.918534.552236@freddi.uddeborg.se> Are there any requirements on the headers of po files for Fedora? In the Translation Project there are some pretty exact requirements on the format. Refer to point 7 of http://translationproject.org/html/translators.html for details. The Fedora files I've updated have had different headers. While some was similar to the TP versions, others assigned the copyright to the initial translator. Does the Fedora project have any opinion on this? If it has, I could follow that for new translations. But what would be necessary to do to make non-conforming header to conform to those rules. I mean, for example, that I can't just change a document where an individual has copyright and assign it to the FSF or someone else. But would an email exchange with the copyright owner be enough? Or what would be required? Or, maybe the right question is: Where should I ask these questions? People can now focus on this version release parties right? WRONG It's time to think of the NEXT version release parties. And how to make the next Fedora version rock so much the parties will be HUGE. In particular, care of issues that will need a full release cycle to mature before the next release. We're not there (yet) ===================== Such as? fonts. Fedora inherited from Red Hat Linux an impeccable American server OS pedigree. Unfortunately it also inherited its ?American server OS limits. Massive non-English Linux desktop deployments often use Debian or Debian derivatives. Meanwhile we discuss English locales support. Why fonts? ========== More than flash or mp3 support we need more fonts, so the text that makes most of our UI renders fine. It does not matter how many cool features the Desktop team adds in the next cycle ? if the UI text screams to the user ?I hate you? he won't install better fonts manually. He'll switch to a competitor that deploys Fedora-developed features with nice fonts. Why fonts? (really) =================== ?We need more artsy fonts so the art team can produce all kinds of cool promotional Fedora material (including release party flyers). We need more international fonts so regions where the Fedora presence is currently nil can join the partying. We need more fonts so the work of all the non-server SIGs is properly appreciated. Over all, we need more fonts so users can customize their desktop to the point they can't envision using something else than Fedora. Why me? ======= The situation got a little better during the Fedora 9 cycle. But we're still badly lagging distributions that have been investing in good font experience for a long time (Debian, Mandriva). And the Fedora 9 effort was produced by few people, that can not scale indefinitely. The Fedora font wishlist has 32 entries today. Not counting the public font lists it references: only fonts someone explicitly requested. That's more than 2/3 of the total of our currently packaged fonts. The list is growing, not shrinking. Many entries have half a year (before we didn't tack them). Clearly a targeted effort by new packagers is required to fix the situation by Fedora 10 time. It's easy! ========== Font packaging is not hard: 1. we've got good official streamlined packaging guidelines http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Fonts/Packaging 2. most font upstreams make few releases; you don't have to track them closely A font package is perfect for would-be packagers that need to ?to learn the ropes on a simple package. A font package is perfect for experienced packagers that do not have the time to take care of another time-waster. Let's party! ============ So here's the deal: A. We need 32 packagers to adopt a font in the SIG wishlist: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Fonts/Triaging/Pipeline#wishes (Including fonts best packaged locally. It's a chicken-and-egg problem: we won't get local packagers before Fedora is attractive enough for them to join) B. We need them to package their font by Fedora 10 alpha? C. *Then* we can have huge Fedora 10 parties D. For Fedora 11, repeat with ?getting better than the competition? as objective ? ?So the result can be tested and the eventual buglets resolved upstream and in fontconfig before the final release -- Nicolas Mailhot -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I'd love to be able to grab a task from a list when I have an unplanned hour or two to spend (like tonight). Is there anything like the equivalent to the discussion page in wikipedia/media wiki? It might make things easier for newbies like me if we can look at a page with notes on what's been done and what still needs to be done especially if it is stored with the actual document. -- fedora-docs-list mailing list fedora-docs-list at redhat.com To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-docs-list From diegobz at gmail.com Mon May 5 12:00:21 2008 From: diegobz at gmail.com (=?ISO-8859-1?Q?Diego_B=FArigo_Zacar=E3o?=) Date: Mon, 5 May 2008 09:00:21 -0300 Subject: [Fwd: Tasks to do?] In-Reply-To: <481EBE6D.9040105@redhat.com> References: <481EBE6D.9040105@redhat.com> Message-ID: <6600c1b10805050500n73e4af1p306431104e797419@mail.gmail.com> Hello! :) On Mon, May 5, 2008 at 4:59 AM, Noriko Mizumoto wrote: > Hi > > Because this mail made me big smile so forwarded :) > This is what something I like to do here in FLP too. > One place to go and find extra exciting task that anyone can help. > Ideally the task is small enough to accomplish with short time. > > Any idea? > How about http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N/Tasks ? Very good idea, it would be perfect place to me. * The Task Name here seems a sub-project size of job to me, in another word it can be listed down small pieces to take out by more people than only one owner? * There are some tasks with no owner, anyone can take up? * Are they all in this Active Task list which currently have been worked by the member(s) of FLP? /me look at Demitris and Asgeir who have not shown up in the active task list... you guys must be working harder on something. In terms of this group, I encourage everyone to adapt the phrase as they like in their language, if the phrase doesn't make sense in your local language and idioms. I'd say change it completely if you think it's best. That's why we call it "localization" and not just "translation" right? :-) In Greek I transferred it as "Waves of change". -d -- Dimitris Glezos Jabber ID: glezos at jabber.org, GPG: 0xA5A04C3B http://dimitris.glezos.com/ "He who gives up functionality for ease of use loses both and deserves neither." You seem to confuse lines in file and messages - file has 329 messages but rather much more lines. Open it in some texte editor (Kate, GEdit, whatever you like), check you have option to view lines in and you'll see errors are exactly on indicated lines (or very nearby). Great work, thank you so much! For whom don't know much about tqsg just in case, this is "Translation Quick Start Guide" which describes how to start translation work, very handy for new comer. We are going to translate this guide into as many languages as possible to lower the bar. Here is the current stat. So I wish if someone can keep the ball rolling...we are almost there. Someone can keep watch the stat for a while, and when most languages updated, he/she can just ask Paul or anyone in Docs team to publish the translated version? Lower the bar is a good thing, but if someone wants to translate for Fedora, it seems to me he/she must understand english as good as possible. Understanding the QTSG is a good test. I think the biggest problem for newcomers comes from the technical operation needed to set up and use a translation environment. Transiflex has helped a lot already, since translators no more need to know how to use CVS. But getting an SSH key for example is not very easy for a new user who's not familiar with command line, file permission... To sum up, I'm ok to translate it, but there are other priorities (at least for the french team), like having a 100% translated Fedora distro. There are some occasions where teams use an intermediate language for translations. This happens in some occasions in Europe and India, where some folks translate to the target language from the French/Hindi of a resource. > Understanding the QTSG is a good test. > > I think the biggest problem for newcomers comes from the technical operation > needed to set up and use a translation environment. Unfortunately for us, translators are required to sign the CLA (ie. have and use a GPG key) to contribute translations, since their contributions end up in the shipped ISO, etc. With Transifex in place though, I'm not sure they are should be required to have an SSH though. > To sum up, I'm ok to translate it, but there are other priorities (at least > for the french team), like having a 100% translated Fedora distro. The document might become more useful if it wasn't a "quick" guide, but it explained better how the project works, how teams collaborate, some explanations on Transifex (mini-manual) etc. -d -- Dimitris Glezos Jabber ID: glezos at jabber.org, GPG: 0xA5A04C3B http://dimitris.glezos.com/ "He who gives up functionality for ease of use loses both and deserves neither." Generally we know MediaWiki has excellent l18n support (including Hebrew support) which is evidenced on http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki. However, looking at https://publictest1.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Main_Page brought some questions: 1. I didn't see any explicit language selection box. Is localized support gone or should it be auto-selected according the the browser language preferences? I tested the later option with my FF set to (he,es,en). Since I got back English I assume there is no automatic language selection. The best (IMO) could be automatic language by browser preference, with an override option on the pages (like in fp.o) 2. Because of (1.) above, I couldn't check if the wiki has localized controls. The existing wiki have partial Hebrew control/navigation (done by upstream). Wikipedia has full localized navigation. What would we get in Fedora deployment of MediaWiki? 3. Another important topic is Hebrew content. Since Hebrew is an RTL (Right-to-Left) language (like Arabic, Farsi and some others) there need to be specific support for this. MediaWiki have the required infrastructure (as can be seen in the wikipedia link above). Is it correctly installed/configured in Fedora? BTW: About two months ago when we started the Hebrew team we had this problem with the current wiki and it was solved very nicely by ricky (at fp.o) using some simple css modifications. [example http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/he_IL/FedoraMain] Unrelated issue: I cannot login to the test server. Tried both my FAS login and the old wiki login. Both fail (which would hamper further testing). Bye and thanks for the (huge) work. I'm sure the migration would be a big step forward even if there are minor hiccups at the begginning. -- Oron Peled Voice/Fax: +972-4-8228492 oron at actcom.co.il http://www.actcom.co.il/~oron ICQ UIN: 16527398 "I love deadlines, especially the whooshing sound they make as they go by." -- Douglas Adams From dimitris at glezos.com Tue May 20 11:44:23 2008 From: dimitris at glezos.com (Dimitris Glezos) Date: Tue, 20 May 2008 14:44:23 +0300 Subject: Help in getting po files accesing cvs repository!!! First I have noticed that in previous and latest Ubuntu release that Gnome translation is much better that I see in Fedora 8 and 9. I wondered why and contacted croatian gnome translation team. The reason is that they use Ubuntu Launchpad to do the translations and so all translation are not automatically pushed to upstream gnome. I feel that this is broken by design. There are options to export translations from Lauchpad and we are working on getting them to upstream Gnome right now. I can only guess but I suspect that our translation team is not the only one caught in this "lost in translation" Lauchpad trap. There are probably lots of translation teams around the world using launchpad to do their translations. So my questions is - has there been any talk with Ubuntu developers and translators regarding this? Do you think this is an issue? Why? How is translation in Fedora handling translation and upstream? Why? > > How is translation in Fedora handling translation and upstream? > > Thank you for your time, > Valent, croatian Fedora Ambassador. > > Hi Valent, First of all, we don't provide the facility to submit upstream Gnome translations through our latest translation system, called Transifex. So, we don't have any conflict with upstream Gnome translation team as of now. Regarding Ubuntu Lauchpad, it doesn't submit the translations to upstream Gnome as of now I think. As per the plans you put in your e-mail, if Ubuntu Lanuchpad system is going to export translations from Launchpad and submit them into Gnome upstream, then there will be definitely huge conflict I can see, because I contribute to Gnome translations and I really don't know who contributes through Launchpad. I guess, you you might want to discuss it with Gnome upstream translators too... -- Regards, Ankit Patel http://www.indianoss.org/ From vpivaini at cs.helsinki.fi Wed May 21 09:09:17 2008 From: vpivaini at cs.helsinki.fi (Ville-Pekka Vainio) Date: Wed, 21 May 2008 12:09:17 +0300 Subject: Lost in translation (Ubuntu and Launchpad translations) In-Reply-To: <64b14b300805210017je0d2e34jcc856a7f2bd9fea3@mail.gmail.com> References: <64b14b300805210017je0d2e34jcc856a7f2bd9fea3@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <200805211209.17944.vpivaini@cs.helsinki.fi> Valent Turkovic wrote: > Do you think this is an issue? Why? I definitely do. This is one example of Ubuntu not being as upstream oriented as a lot of the other distributions like Fedora are. Launchpad itself is also closed source and it seems there are no plans of open sourcing it. In Fedora, the whole infrastructure, including Transifex, is completely open source. Of course the Canonical people have the right to choose their license, but I see Launchpad translations as a way of trying to get short term competitive advantage and not caring about the long term good of the whole open source ecosystem. Ubuntu talks a lot about humanity and community, but it seems they only care about these things when it comes to their own "clique" of people, not the greater community of open source users and contributors. They also talk a lot about open source, but then they're not willing to "eat their own dogfood". I'm one of the maintainers of Finnish translations for some of the applications that Fedora is upstream and Ubuntu is downstream for, like system-config-printer. I have stopped caring about Launchpad completely. I can't be bothered to go there looking for new translations or changes. If a patch gets sent to me and it looks good, I will gladly apply it, but I won't go hunting for things. > How is translation in Fedora handling translation and upstream? Upstream. I did some translations for gnome-packagekit and policykit-gnome, which I sent directly to the upstream Gnome L10n maintainers. I've also done the same for KDE. That's the Fedora way, as far as I can see. (At the end of my rant, I do want to thank the Finnish Gnome translation team, though. I know a lot of them are Ubuntu users, but they get the open source idea and commit their changes to the upstream Gnome repository as well. Maybe this is something you should talk about with the Gnome team of your language.) -- Ville-Pekka Vainio From sankarshan at randomink.org Wed May 21 09:22:01 2008 From: sankarshan at randomink.org (Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay) Date: Wed, 21 May 2008 14:52:01 +0530 Subject: Lost in translation (Ubuntu and Launchpad translations) In-Reply-To: <64b14b300805210017je0d2e34jcc856a7f2bd9fea3@mail.gmail.com> References: <64b14b300805210017je0d2e34jcc856a7f2bd9fea3@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: On Wed, May 21, 2008 at 12:47 PM, Valent Turkovic wrote: [snip] > First I have noticed that in previous and latest Ubuntu release that > Gnome translation is much better that I see in Fedora 8 and 9. This particular issue has been a regular point of discussion on gnome-i18n mailing list and each time there hasn't been a definite solution proposed other than the expression of intent to ensure that translations are upstreamed.
