Since then, updated translations have been posted for Czech, Slovak, Swedish, Russian and Punjabi. Shortly after the release announcement I will rebuild those languages and post them to docs.fp.o. --McD From sir.zhangwei at gmail.com Mon Jun 1 13:47:17 2009 From: sir.zhangwei at gmail.com (sir.zhangwei) Date: Mon, 1 Jun 2009 21:47:17 +0800 Subject: Self-Introduction:Zhang Wei Message-ID: <200906012147057819679@gmail.com> Hello, My name Zhang Wei and I'm from China. "container continue" doesn't mean anything in itself, it's just the type of domain being handled, and the fact we try to send a continue message. > Q. Three languages are completely (or almost completely) translated: Dutch, Spanish, and Italian. These are also the only languages more than 65% complete. Obviously[1], we'll publish these. There are four additional languages at 50% and up: German, French, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese. Should we publish these in this state? The remaining 29 languages are less than half-way there. Should we publish these in this state? (Eight of these are under 10% complete, and of these, two are under 1%) You can, of course, see which languages are at which state of completion on the Guide's Transifex page[2]. Thoughts? Thanks Ruediger [1] Well, it *should* be obvious... I'm aware that the 100% complete translations of the Fedora 10 guide are *still* not up. I tried to fix this, but unfortunately, I have not been able to master the old fedora-docs-utils tools; Publican was already in use when I joined Red Hat. I'm still hoping that someone more experienced with the old tools can do this for us. Due to your efforts, Publican can now support 37 languages other than English [1] Publican also relies on word lists for various languages that are produced by the Docbook project upstream of us [2]. These stylesheet files provide around 150 common words like "chapter", "index", "warning" -- mostly labels and headings that are not part of the text itself. While stylesheets exist for nearly every language for which Fedora documentation exists, there are a small number of exceptions. No stylesheet exists yet for: * Assamese * Malay * Malayalam * Marathi * Sinhalese * Telugu Unfortunately, the nature of these stylesheets makes our usual translation mechanism (through PO files) difficult, since these are really only lists of isolated words, with no context whatsoever, and these words are structured in a way that makes them appear as empty strings in PO files! [3] Finally, development of these stylesheets takes place upstream, and not in the Fedora project itself. With all this in mind, I've put together a spreadsheet of the words that need translating, with some explanatory notes in English, and uploaded it to my fedorapeople page here: http://rlandmann.fedorapeople.org/locale.ods I already have volunteers to help with Malay. Is there anyone who can help out with 150 words in any of the other five languages on the list above? I hope to take any spreadsheets that I receive, transfer the results into properly formatted stylesheets, and get these included into the docbook project upstream. Please let me know if you'd like to help. Cheers Ruediger PS: if you want to see the stylesheets already in Fedora and their contents, make sure you have the docbook-style-xsl package installed. You will find the stylesheets in a directory named like /usr/share/sgml/docbook/xsl-stylesheets-1.74.0/common (the number at the end of xsl-stylesheets-1.74.0 will vary, depending on the version of the package on your system) [1] https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Publican/Common_Content -- does your language have green ticks yet? :) [2] http://docbook.sourceforge.net/ [3] for example, the entry for "Appendix" is "". Note that the text is *inside* the tag, not between tags. I left these strings fuzzy so that translators can double check that I didn't screw anything up. I'd really appreciate if translators can do a double check of their language on fedoraproject.org and let me know if anything messed up. My apologies for not catching this error earlier. No stylesheet exists yet for: Glad you brought this up, as I've noticed a related problem with Serbian Latin Release Notes (mostly untranslated though): these common words seems to be pulled from the Cyrillic sr DocBook stylesheets, although up to date Latin ones do exist, and worked ok before Publican. I suspect a problem of matching Publican's sr-Latn-RS label to DocBook's sr_latn stylesheet (we had sr_Latn po files for docs before, and DocBook matching was case insensitive, but you also have hyphens instead of underscores to worry about now as well). Note that the text is *inside* the tag, not > between tags. > Hi, Couple of things before we go further. * It's really important to translate these messages as Rudi described, since it does appear as common contents in the publican generated books. * Finally, I managed to find the exact upstream location of the translation xml files: http://docbook.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/docbook/trunk/gentext/locale/ :) * For Indic languages there is no concept of Lower case or Capital, so translation remains same for both cases. Localizers will take care of it. * I noticed for many of the existing translated languages, Month Names are still in English. Respective language communities might want to translate those. * Managing the translations via openoffice file format looks difficult to me. I think it's better to get it converted to PO format. Conversion looks difficult now, but definitely not impossible. Someone with good Shell, Perl scripting knowledge would want to take this opportunity I guess. * Once the conversion to PO becomes possible out of these xml files, it would be good if we (transif user) can have the access to upstream sf.net repo and the module added to Transifex. I think it's fantastic that Fedora gets such solid support from the very top ranks at Red Hat, directly on the company's press site. One thing that is always in the back of my head, as we work through all the various release bits, is that I know on release day Red Hat's CEO -- just like thousands of other people -- is going to download Fedora and take it for a ride. Although Jim singled out some specific areas in his blog that immediately impressed him about Fedora 11, from our phone conversations I know that he's very proud of the work every team in Fedora does. He is genuinely passionate about Fedora, and that's due to *your* superb efforts as part of our large extended family of contributors. Thanks to all of you for making this release such an incredible experience. I hope you enjoy Fedora 11 too, and I'm very excited about working with all of you on Fedora 12! -- Paul W. We've applied a patch to fix the problem now. Sorry we missed this report for so long. In the future, you can report problems like this fedora-infrastructure-list at fedoraproject.org, admin at fedoraproject.org, or #fedora-admin on Freenode and we'll try to get on them immediately. I don't have a problem if the meeting takes place in the normal time and day. There are a couple of folks to give an update from the L10n-admin team. Hi, before the F11 release, we went through the languages and disabled all the ones that did not have updated translations. If any translators ever submit a translation where the language option is not shown on the website (it's not in LINGUAS), please don't just update LINGUAS - email me or webmaster at fp.o and we'll add it, because we also need to add some apache configuration at the same time to make things work. If the this configuration isn't added, the language option may show up at fedoraproject.org but fail to work. I'm adding Dutch to LINGUAS and the configuration right now.
