Unfortunately, that doesn't actually work because Publican doesn't understand the big, merged PO files that translators are working with. Translators would need to split the single, big PO files to refresh Publican's many little PO files and /then/ run the test. A few months back, I documented the procedure in a post here to f-t-l: see [1] and a slight correction [2]. It's certainly achievable, but only for the brave :) Cheers Ruediger [1] https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-trans-list/2009-May/msg00150.html [2] https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-trans-list/2009-May/msg00169.html From bugzilla at redhat.com Thu Oct 1 15:35:53 2009 From: bugzilla at redhat.com (bugzilla at redhat.com) Date: Thu, 1 Oct 2009 11:35:53 -0400 Subject: [Bug 526737] Please add Fedora 12 component for installation-quick-start-guide and remove "master" In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <200910011535.n91FZrNW005972@bz-web1.app.phx.redhat.com> Please do not reply directly to this email. It's certainly achievable, but only for the > brave :) > :-) LOL Thank you Ruediger and Paul. I tried to be that brave this morning. I installed publican and publican-fedora, and I took a look at Makefile.templates file, from where the target test-LANG comes from. It builds from xml, which should be first constructed from several po files that comes from the big es.po file. I didn't remember Ruediger posts to split the big po file, so I stopped there. The check made by publican is a complete xml test. But to submit translations file, we need a simpler test that only checks for xml/html tags in msgstr strings. If there is a there should be a . Malformed tags like "" should be escaped for po files to be used with tools like publican. Just that, perhaps in poEdit or other l10n tool. And leave the semantic checking to Publican's test-LANG target. It seems there is no such a tool. But it would help a lot to new translators. If it's not difficult to do, it may be a command line tool to check a po file before submission in Transifex, for files to be used in Publican-like tools (a new field in the project's record in the database to indicate that it's necessary to do that check before accepting the file). I will try again later. kind regards Domingo Becker (es) From r.landmann at redhat.com Thu Oct 1 16:52:01 2009 From: r.landmann at redhat.com (Ruediger Landmann) Date: Fri, 02 Oct 2009 02:52:01 +1000 Subject: Fedora 12 docs now available in Transifex Message-ID: <4AC4DE31.5070301@redhat.com> Hi all -- Sorry that, we're a little behind schedule, but Fedora 12 docs are now available in Transifex: * Many of you have already seen and worked on the Release Notes: https://translate.fedoraproject.org/projects/docs-release-notes/f12-tx/ -- many thanks! The script I am running every night is in the build directory of the master branch. It is called make-l10n. With a few relatively simple fixes that script could build a single language: 1) Replace the line: GITIT="git clone ssh://jjmcd at git.fedorahosted.org/git/docs/release-notes.git" with GITIT="git clone git://git.fedorahosted.org/git/docs/release-notes.git" 2) There is a list of languages near the top of the script. Count, starting from zero, until you find your language. 3) Delete from "make html-en-US" through "ftp -pi fedora.is-sixsigma.com Chen Huan Shanghai, China chenh, chinese(simplified) BEC1 [chenh2 at localhost ~]$ gpg --fingerprint 0672022C pub 1024D/0672022C 2009-10-02 ???? = B1DE 320C B8B9 49A7 4518 9882 EB57 149C 0672 022C uid Chen Huan (chenhuan) sub 2048g/F0A5518F 2009-10-02 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'd really like translators to be able to contribute translations directly into my projects, as outlined here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N/FAQ#How_do_I_add_a_module_to_Transifex.3F_.28.23add-transifex.29 and from what I hear from another project where this is done[0] it seems to work really well. _However_ neither of the methods described above is suitable for me. I don't want to change the project hosting to use Fedorahosted, and I cannot allow ssh access to the hosting machines from anywhere in the world. What would really work much better is if transifex could publish a git[1] repository with a rebasable branch containing the translations that I could pull. I could track this branch automatically, and merge the contents in just before a release (resolving any conflicts myself). An alternative would be to allow me to rsync the po/ directory (as is done by translationproject.org[2]). What do you think? Rich. [0] virt-v2v [1] Some of the projects are using Mercurial, but we'll be switching these over to git real soon. This is something that we can't support for a few reasons: 1. Publishing VCSs requires a lot of work (considering the security work and all the VCS needed to be exposes). It also doesn't work for centralized VCSs. 2. Automatic rebase is something we can't do in Tx either. Conflicts will show up which Tx can't handle automatically. Distributed VCSs allow having branches anywhere, so one could use an intermediate branch on eg. github or fedorahosted instead of a Transifex-hosted one. In addition, this allows you to completely delete it if you want, do rebasing as you like, and just ask Transifex to 'pull a new copy'. I understand this is definitely not the same as having one rebasable pullable branch published by Tx, but it's a very good compromise offering all the benefits which at the moment are blockers. Hence, I can see two choices: 1. Migrate all your code somewhere where both Tx and community developers can have access to, and have Tx eg. push to a non-master branch. 2. Host a branch somewhere where Tx can have access to (mentioned above) and every now and then do an automatic `git pull`. Hosting on et.redhat.com sounds like a strategic non-reversible decision, so I guess the best choice is #2. > An alternative would be to allow me to rsync the po/ directory (as is > done by translationproject.org[2]). This sounds like the worse choice, especially when one considers that you are already using a dVCS. -d > [0] virt-v2v > > [1] Some of the projects are using Mercurial, but we'll be switching > these over to git real soon. > > [2] http://translationproject.org/html/maintainers.html > > -- > Richard Jones, Emerging Technologies, Red Hat ?http://et.redhat.com/~rjones > virt-df lists disk usage of guests without needing to install any > software inside the virtual machine. ?Supports Linux and Windows. > http://et.redhat.com/~rjones/virt-df/ > > -- > Fedora-trans-list mailing list > Fedora-trans-list at redhat.com > https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-list > -- Dimitris Glezos Transifex: The Multilingual Publishing Revolution http://www.transifex.net/ -- http://www.indifex.com/ From kmaraas at broadpark.no Mon Oct 5 10:33:46 2009 From: kmaraas at broadpark.no (Kjartan Maraas) Date: Mon, 05 Oct 2009 12:33:46 +0200 Subject: Problems sending in translations Message-ID: <1254738826.2326.64.camel@localhost> Hi. I've been experiencing problems when trying to send in translations via transifex. For a lot of the projects I get an error when sending the translation: We're sorry, but the requested page is currently unavailable. We're messing around with things internally, and the server had a bit of a hiccup. Please try again later. This happens for authconfig, libuser, system-config-httpd at least. Hi Dmitry, That you say the translationproject's approach of providing downloadable .po files seems like the worst approach makes me think you don't understand how it works. Here's what I do in upstream coreutils: The build-from-source procedure involves running a script named bootstrap which downloads any new or updated .po files for the project. For coreutils, I choose not to version-control the .po files, since they are tracked externally (tp.org), but that is a personal choice. I could have chosen to VC them. Albeit at the cost of a lot of churn, since they change frequently, and in small, insignificant ways that would end up polluting my VC history and making it harder for me to manage code-related searches through the history (there would be many false-positives). Once the .po files are downloaded, the usual tools (msgmerge, xgettext) update them with respect to any changed or removed messages. When I make a release, I send the TP coordinator a pointer to the tarball, and they take care of updating their official copy of the .POT file, which then sends a signal to translation teams that there are (usually) new messages to translate. The bottom line is that I have no trouble with .po-file merges, *ever*. In fact, I tend to forget about translations, and that is as it should be. It's only when I run ./bootstrap that occasionally I see a new cs.po, fr.po, etc. file is being (quickly!) rsync'd from the tp.org server. hth Jim From rjones at redhat.com Mon Oct 5 11:03:44 2009 From: rjones at redhat.com (Richard W.M. This version lacks a number of features available in later versions of Transifex that are very important for the Fedora Documentation Project. Specifically, these include the ability to handle more than one PO file per language per component and the ability to recognise the BCP 47 language codes that are part of the XML specification. An infrastructure ticket is already open: https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-infrastructure/ticket/1455 but some bugs in Bugzilla now depend on this upgrade, so I'm filing this bug as a blocker. Installation quick start guide for F11 > http://docs.fedoraproject.org/installation-quick-start-guide/f11/es-ES/html-single/ > > The strings with no translations are some of the index > Entries in the indexes of Publican books come directly from the titles of chapters and sections; entries appear in English in the index of the Spanish books because, unfortunately, they also appear in English in the chapters and sections themselves: for example, look at the headings on these pages: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f11/es-ES/html/s1-langselection-x86.html http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f11/es-ES/html/ch07s12.html http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f11/es-ES/html/sn-networkconfig-fedora.html These missing strings are sadly the result of the complicated process that we must follow at the moment to merge all of Publican's many small PO files together into one big PO file for Transifex, then splitting the big PO file back into many small PO files to build in Publican. Let's look at the first example: "7.11. Language Selection" Here is the XML file that holds the English title: http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/docs/install-guide.git?p=docs/install-guide.git;a=blob;f=en-US/Language_Selection_common-title.xml;h=5e94d8ec79f5f3b39000f3dfe81f4da53ace95d2;hb=485b0213fdb3ce7433852ff64870fc0a8072d729 Publican transforms this whole XML file into a POT file ("make update-pot"): http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/docs/install-guide.git?p=docs/install-guide.git;a=blob;f=pot/Language_Selection_common-title.pot;h=22a75944da222d27af9782cd50f201fcb3ac51dc;hb=485b0213fdb3ce7433852ff64870fc0a8072d729 And then into a PO file for Spanish ("make update-po-es-ES"): http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/docs/install-guide.git?p=docs/install-guide.git;a=blob;f=es-ES/Language_Selection_common-title.po;h=ee5def09d6442d5eeb4f79f372d0dffaad092114;hb=485b0213fdb3ce7433852ff64870fc0a8072d729 -- note that Publican has matched this string as a fuzzy with an (incorrect) other string that it found elsewhere. The Installation Guide contains several hundred separate PO files. To make the book available in Transifex, we have to merge them together into one big PO file. In the Docs project, we have been using (for example) "msgcat -u -o es.po *.po" within Publican's es-ES directory to prepare these big PO files. However, for some reason, some strings get lost sometimes. If you look at the es.po file generated with this method, you will see that this string is missing: http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/docs/install-guide.git?p=docs/install-guide.git;a=blob;f=po/es.po;h=6f9c7c2c16711d9f4fc476e058d448721f47f052;hb=485b0213fdb3ce7433852ff64870fc0a8072d729 -- I would expect to find it around line 16096, but it isn't there... :( Please file a bug against the Fedora 11 Installation Guide so that we have a record that this happened. If anyone knows of a more reliable method or tool to merge the many small PO files into a single, big PO file, please say so! I also seem to recall seeing problems in the other direction; some strings that were translated in the big PO files were sometimes lost while splitting them into many small PO files -- I can't think of an example right now, but someone else might remember? > and the common content. As far as I can tell. the only part of the Common Content that ever appeared in English was the Legal Notice, which always appears in English, for legal reasons. Was there something else wrong? On 10/06/2009 06:56 AM, Domingo Becker wrote: > The new option "autostep --autoscreenshot" in the kickstart file would > probably make it ease to get the localized screenshots included in the > Install Guide. > > Don't hesitate to ask translators to get those screenshots. > Thanks! I'll probably need some of that help when the F12 Beta becomes available. > For Fedora 11 Install Guide they are all in English. We can improve that. :-) > Actually, no, the F11 Installation Guide screenshots were all localised (to the extent that anaconda itself was). I remember taking something like 60 screenshots per language in around 40 languages... Take a browse through the test builds here: http://rlandmann.fedorapeople.org/Installation%20Guide/ Of course, the degree of localisation depends on the degree of localisation in anaconda. For example, the text of this screen appears in English: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f11/es-ES/html/ch07s12.html But if you notice the "Atr?s" and "Siguiente" buttons, you will see that this is actually a Spanish installation of Fedora. Hopefully, this is fixed in Fedora 12.... :) Of course, with so many screenshots and so many languages, it's quite possible I made some mistakes here and there. For example, I just realised that I used the wrong screenshot for the "Keyboard selection" screen in Spanish, and have fixed this -- the changes should appear on the website the next time that the server synchronises with the docs repo. If you notice any other wrong images, please let me know on f-t-l, f-d-l, in email, or in a bug -- there are lots of ways to reach me ;) Kind regards, and thank you, as always for the amazing work that you guys do. The big pot file issue is solved in the next Transifex, that is not still in use in Fedora Infrastructure. If necessary, let's wait until then. Anyway, we still have work to do with Installation Guide, Virtualization Guide and SELinux Managing Confined Services Guide. We can be busy until that upgrade. I am just wondering if there will be the cs-CZ translation of RN available in the following days based on the version in transifex. The last successful build is based on a version of the translation when it was at 40%. Now (from Sunday) it is at 90%. But because of the errors there has not been a successful build with the version at 90% so far. Can I expect that there will be a build in the following days? Josef I will continue to run te job, but there were a number of other issues in the Czek translation that I eventually fixed for the rpm. However, my fixes don't go back to Transifex, so the errors will still be there for the job that runs tonight. All the corrections are in the cs.po in the master branch of git, but pulling them out from that gigantic file will be something of a chore. I was thinking that I could push up the log file instead of the html if the job should fail, but then you wouldn't be able to just look at the dates to see whether it was successful. At least that way you could get the error without my having to manually pull it out. And even then, the error messages themselves are kind of hard to understand much of the time. I have confirmed with Red Hat's legal department today that this notice should not be translated. The reason is simple: in legal matters, the /exact/ wording of the notice has consequences. Therefore, if we translate the legal notice, the legal department would need to check and approve the wording in every language. Unfortunately, the legal department simply does not have the resources to do this. Maybe this should be added to an L10N FAQ somewhere? I now know where to look and in what. And I can then "propagate" (manually copy) the changes to the Transifex. Sorry that I am not very helpful to your work. Translating several hundreds of strings is not easy for one person. So, I usually try to translate quickly, but without any real or deep control quality considerations. Then I do the other rounds where I concentrate much more on the quality - first, trying to correct my mistakes (spelling, grammar) and second, very often I have to look at the Internet for information on some projects/software to be able to translate some more technically-oriented topics (sometime I have no really a clue what I am translating about). In short, I have just finished the first round. Now, it's the time when I will try to correct my mistakes and overall polish the text. It is just that if I can have access to files like your one it would be fine also for me to correct myself. But anyway, next time I will try to be more careful also to you, ie. from the beginning. ;-) > It should be fairly evident that the red lines were replaced with the > green. > > Hope this helps, and thanks fr paying such close attention > > --McD > Josef From wb8rcr at arrl.net Wed Oct 7 21:14:45 2009 From: wb8rcr at arrl.net (John J. Message-ID: <4ACD9374.9000403@redhat.com> Hi, Though this is little late for Fedora 12 now, some of you may be still translating system-config-{date,samba,nfs,services,users}-docs packages. Just came across a query on the $subject. To review or proof-read software packages the process is pretty known I guess. - Download the PO files - Convert to MO files using "msgfmt -i PO_file -o MO_file" - Place the MO files to locale directories '/usr/share/locale//LC_MESSAGES/' with appropriate naming - Run the application in your native language. That's it! However, to review or proof-read s-c-*-docs packages the process is bit different since the translations are picked up from translated xml files by the utility called yelp to view help messages. So, here goes the steps of file conversion & hence review: - Make sure you have "kdesdk" package group installed, which provides po2xml conversion utility - Download the PO files from transifex status page, for instance system-config-date-docs.ja.po - Translate or modify your PO file (when you are reviewing) - Grab the english XML file from git repo[1] OR from your locally installed one from "/usr/share/gnome/help/system-config-date/C/system-config-date.xml" - Convert your PO to xml using "po2xml system-config-date.xml system-config-date.master-docs.ja.po > system-config-date.ja.xml" - Place the converted xml file to "sudo cp system-config-date.ja.xml /usr/share/gnome/help/system-config-date/ja/system-config-date.xml" - And run system-config-date in your native language. When you click on "Help" will get you the modified translations. - That's it. In short, you need to convert PO to xml file that yelp understands and put it under right location. Thanks! If I was you, I would attach the translated file onto this bug#493795 (even closed), asking if they still can take and include F12. When the maintainer says 'yes' I say 'hurray!', if 'no' or no response, I would open new bug for F13 just like this bug. Message-ID: <4AE033C0.8020406@redhat.com> During the installation I just realized that there were quite a few messages appear in English after Amanpreet Singh Aalam showed it to me. The messages were coming from a package called cracklib. Cracklib is a next generation version of libCrack password checking library. [1] Anaconda depends on cracklib for password checking while entering root password during installation. The messages that comes during installation while entering new passwords for root user do come from cracklib package. So, the translation of cracklib package is quite helpful to make your anaconda look completely localized. Translations of cracklib can now be submitted through transifex upstream [2]. It's a very small amount of translation work - 15 messages only. Thanks to Jan Dittberner from cracklib.sf.net for working with upstream transifex to get it included. Adding Fedora i18n team in the CC to provide help here. Can we have URLs at [2] against each requirement of Language Support Criteria, that helps one to understand what to do next to get it done? e.g. if "Support in Unicode" is not there for a new language, what is the action to be taken to get the "Support in Unicode" for a new language. a URL providing these info should be helpful enough I guess. Astur, I think you can start translating Fedora packages for your language without waiting for I18n Language Support Criteria to be met, since I can see majority of the criteria are already met for your language. You need to fill this form: https://translate.fedoraproject.org/contact/ to enable Asturia, which is not there in Translation Quick Start Guide[1] I guess. If you do not want to wait till admins enable "Asturian" in the list of languages, you could still go ahead by visiting "Projects" and choosing the latest branches (say "master" or "trunk" or "HEAD" or "tip") and adding ast.po file for respective packages. If you are not comfortable with it, I would recommend you to wait till Asturian language is enabled. Sorry about the confusion. Please do not hesitate to email your queries. You can also catch us over irc freenode, #fedora-l10n (nick: ankit) channel for quick discussion of issues you face. Following string in F12 Release Notes appears in English even though it is translated in PO file: "What's new for amateur radio operators" I checked couple of other localized HTMLs (pt-BR, pl-PL) as well, they seem to display the same English string. Being a title (7.5 in ToC), it's pretty easy to spot. Anyone has any idea what the problem could be? Translations to the master branch will show up on fp.o on release day, and translations to the f12-beta branch will show up on fp.o from now until release day. For languages that already show up on fedoraproject.org, you can just send translations regularly, and they should show up as described above. For new languages that aren't on fedoraproject.org yet, please email webmaster at fedoraproject.org, and we'll add the language to LINGUAS and the apache configs. One thing to note is that spins.fedoraproject.org might not be completely ready for translations yet until release day, since the content for that site is still going in right now. We'll send another update about this when that's ready to be translated. Thanks, Ricky -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... During translation of docs-user-guide.f12-tx I found it strange that Thunderbird section is about version 2.0.x but version of Thunderbird installed in Fedora 12 by default is 3.0.x. Also section about IM client is devoted to Pidgin but as far I know default IM client in Fedora 12 is Empathy. I've downloaded po-file from https://translate.fedoraproject.org/projects/docs-user-guide/f12-tx/.
