This doesn't happen for me on Fedora 8:

$ javac -source 1.4 -target 1.4 test.java
$ gij test
b is false
$ gij --version
java version "1.5.0"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.1.2 20070925 (Red Hat 4.1.2-33)
$ rpm -q libgcj
libgcj-4.1.2-33
