This is no longer an issue by the way. In Fedora 12, it works fine:

$ rpm -q ecj
ecj-3.4.2-7.fc12.i686

$ ecj Generics.java 
----------
1. WARNING in Generics.java (at line 7)
        List<String> l;
                     ^
The local variable l is never read
----------
1 problem (1 warning)
