Poste seu smb.conf completo aqui, também poste o que os logs estão apresentando. Não sei como você está usando este samba, se está apenas compartilhando diretórios ou esta servindo de PDC tb. Lembre-se que no Win98, diferentemente do XP (onde voce pode especificar um usuario para conectar ao compartilhamento) o 98 passa como parametro user o usuario logado na máquina.
