Good point, but there is certainly no standard for monitoring daemons.
Some will be running proprietary daemons.

I'm not aware of an existing protocol for that.  Does anyone
have any suggestions?

virt-p2v converts physical machines to virtual machines.  Boot with a
live CD or over the network (PXE) and turn machines into Xen guests.
