I just wanted to subscribe to the Fedora 7 Released Updates Feed found
at http://fedoraproject.org/infofeed/ .
The feed URL is
http://fedoraproject.org/infofeed/inputs/f7-updates-released.xml

Unfortunately, the feed doesn't work as Life Bookmark in Firefox 2.0.0.5
under Fedora 7 (it stays empty). Is this normal behavior?

My apologies. I was using Google Reader. I compared this feed(
http://fedoraproject.org/infofeed/inputs/f7-updates-released.xml ) with this
one ( http://fedoraproject.org/infofeed/rss20.xml  ) and noticed the one
that didn't work had encoding=utf-8 in the xml statement. This might be the
problem.

Hmm, I ran the feed through a validator and (apart from the UTF-8
error), saw something about <guid> not being a full URL.  Perhaps it
needs to be <guid isPermaLink="false"> instead?  

skvidal: I've made a one-line patch for repo-rss.py that seems to
produce a working feed:

Could you update it on planet.fp.o?

The webmaster at fedoraproject.org address is only for issues related to 
Fedora's websites.  For general Fedora support, please refer to the
help resources described at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate.
Make sure to ask your question being as specific/detailed as possible.  

Note that FC5 and below are no longer supported, and do not receive
security (or other) updates anymore.

I've recently decided to join the Websites Project.  I have experience in
(X)HTML/CSS (5 years), PHP (1.5 years), JavaScript (2 years) and many of the
associated technologies.  I have a little bit of experience in design. Due
to the fact that I generally work with professional designers to slice and
code their work, I haven't had too many opportunities to develop my own
personal design skills.  I have system administration and hardware
experience as well, but am not sure how that would play a part in the
Websites Project. I look forward to becoming active within the project as
soon as I am needed.  Thanks!

like the Art group already has for image/graphic requests.

Separate Trac instance with access to fedora-web? Or let all
website-related tickets in the infrastructure Trac to CC this list? But
we do need something like that, just to keep an eye on what is going on.
The tie-in with infra is quite logical b/c off the close connection
between both, but it seems that not everyone follows both. Just my
$0.02.

If I understand correctly, there would be appreciate both HTML 
implementations and PNG mock-ups.
If true, then the wording in description could be altered a bit to 
reflect it (and not scare people).
If the focus is on "knowledge of kid or genshi templates", maybe some 
links would be useful for a newbie wanting to learn (something better 
than http://www.google.com/search?q=kid+template).

Subject: Fedora Websites Build Script

Hi!

I've been alluding to this for a while, but we now have a new website
build script for our static pages!  This script is currently generating
the pages at http://fedoraproject.org/_/en/, and should be making our
static pages beginning with the Fedora 8 website.  

To get the build script/Genshi templates/website content:
git clone ssh://git.fedoraproject.org/git/hosted/fedora-web.git
(or git:// for anonymous access)

Now, members of the web group in FAS should be able to commit/push to
this repo.  With this change, the web group will be moving to more of a
sponsorship model, which has worked well for the Infrastructure team.

Anyway, I can't wait to see how we can use this to expand our current
set of static pages (I will be editing the wiki accordingly shortly).

That is a test page included with our operating system; we don't
actually control the site in question.  For more information about this,

Well, I know the knowledge to write the html/kid or genshi templates
to implement any PNG mockups does exists within the web sites group.
And given PNG mockups the template work could be, and in my experience
is, done by some one other than the designer anyway, so maybe the
wording is scaring people off.

Just to be clear, I can help make any templates or markup (and I am
sure others too) if we have designs and actual grahpics to work from.
Such as a layered GIMP or .psd file.

The thing to remember is that our wiki is mostly targeting developers at 
this point.  There's very little there for users.  Most of that stuff is 
being migrated to docs.fedoraproject.org and 
http://fedoraproject.org/(not wiki)

We have traditionally been overloading the wiki and using it for all 
kinds of purposes and it has gotten slow and tedious now. Now that we 
have a front page with static html that looks a lot better, I think we 
need to move most of the common end user content elsewhere.

I have filed a request to infrastructure team to launch 
news.fedoraproject.org and I think drupal would fit that purpose very 
well now though I am open to other choices.

If you think there are very important links that should be in the front 
page, just add those back in an appropriate manner. I don't think 
reverting back is the right answer here.

Join Fedora is also not what I want
Docs: no, I don't want docs, I want to know about the plans when F8 will
be released, or how the beta status is
Wiki: hmmm... maybe, if you like it complicated, maybe I find here what
I seek. but no link that told me "here is what you're looking for"
Planet: Planet? ok, the description says "The voices of the Fedora
Community", but I don't want to hear the community (right now)
Communicate, Speak with Fedora: ummm no, not what I want

Is there not an easier and faster way to get some infos about planned
new releases then to dig deeply in wiki's and forums etc?

By the way, I like the fedoraproject.org web site. It's simple and easy,
not overloaded with pictures and text. But when I don't find what I am
looking for in a reasonable time, then.... Ok, maybe my search methods
are not the best, can be. :)

I agree that our website is be somewhat disorganized now.  We are
currently planning to move some information off of the wiki to a more

I think the schedule stuff would be good on our new news site which is 
still in planning stages, I don't think it belongs on the front page 
though as its  more of a developer oriented or.. 'uber user' type 
request.  Also Google found it pretty easy :)

I assume that you are talking about a page that looks like this:

That is a test page included with our operating system (which the
website that you are trying to view is apparently using), and we don't
have control over their site.  For more information, please refer to
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ServerTestPage.

You might have more luck in contacting the owner/administrator of the
site in question.

rendering with a gap between the main body and the right-sidebar in Firefox

to the Sub-Projects' table pusing over onto the right-sidebar.

A thought about FAS2 and wiki integration:

Since wiki editing is tied in with FAS2 and CLA signing, it'd be nice to
integrate them nicely (click-through CLAs are already implemented in
FAS2), but one annoyance is that WikiNames do not generally match usernames.  
Other than for (weakly) connecting wiki usernames to FAS users, is there
any particular reason that we're going with the FirstnameLastname
convention?  Would it somehow be "bad" for users to have the same
username for FAS and the wiki in the future?

the wiki predates fas being used for authenticating stuff. So it's not
on purpose that it has been done that way.

I think changing it out so that everything uses the FAS username would
be good.

Wiki linking is much easier with the current convention in the wiki. 
Having the actual name also is more transparent.

Hi, I'm Makoto Mizukami. Nice to mail all of you!

I have one proposal about "Valid HTML" link of Wiki footer.
When I click "Valid HTML" link, W3C returns me "This page is unvalid!".
According to the responce, these following things are not allowed to be written on HTML 4.0.1 Strict:
*"border" element of <img> tag(ex. Headmark of Fedora Wiki)
*"width" element of <td> tag(ex. The part of editers' name of footer)
*It is not forbidden but being of last "/" in empty tag(??I dont know how this is called in en...) like XHTML

If the link is not going be erased, it will be better to fix their errors. These will be resolved by chaging DOCTYPE to HTML 4.0.1 Transitional or fixing all assignments by W3C. However, I don't know how to edit these tags which depends on Wiki system.

Please give me your tips or your idea.

days are left for the Fedora 8 release and do it every time a month 
before a major release.

Would be even better if this counter can be copied by others like a 
banner on their websites.

I know Ricky (IIRC) made a pass at this.  Any chance such could be
made live for Fedora 7 now, and then updated for Fedora 8 in a few
weeks?  Like Mike, I feel that the lack of a one-click download on the
front page has cut into our download numbers significantly.

now is very close to ready, Ricky what do you think?

Thanks for pointing this out.  The markup errors should be fixed now,
and as for the unnecessary self-closing tags, this seems to be a bug
in moin (which seems to be marked as a non-bug, unfortunately):

We're using MoinMoin, and our theme (kindofblue) is located at
http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewcvs/web/wiki/?root=fedora.  If you're
interested, the CSS/HTML could probably still use a lot of cleanup :)

I think the script should pretty much be ready now, and I should have
the syncStatic.sh and Apache config changes ready to checkin to puppet
CVS.  

As for the download links, ivazquez has been working on an updated
get-fedora page with direct links to torrent.fp.o - how do think we can
nicely incorporate direct download links there as well?

For information on logo usage, see http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo.
In particular, I think you should email logo at fedoraproject.org to
request usage permission and high resolution/SVG versions.

Hi,

Attached is a counter design in SVG with a bitmap preview.

If you look at the xml in the SVG, you have to change the element with 
the 'counter-text' id (it's inside the element with the 'counter' id) to 
whatever number of days are left and the graphic will update accordingly.

You might be able to write a script in python using inkex to modify the 
value [1]... maybe use command-line inkscape [2] to re-render the PNG 
for display on the website.

Just an idea anyway.

Okay this might be a bit harder than I originally thought.  I was
originally thinking of doing something in Javascript but I think
Mairin's suggestion is awesome and I am still happy to have a go at
it.  I might be slow tho...

On your site how and for what purpose?  As a link to the Fedora
website?  On letterhead - unlikely to be permitted unless you have a
business relationship with Red Hat that would permit such.  Please

Okay, here's what I got (see attached files)

run counter.py like so:

python counter.py [input SVG] [number of days to update counter to] 
[output SVG[

so for example:

python counter.py fedora-countdown-banner.svg 37 fedora-countdown-banner.svg

Anyone want to run with this? hehe, maybe could set this in a cron job, 
then also write a python script to convert the svg to a png using inkex?

Oh haha, or if you could install inkscape, you could do:

inkscape -z fedora-countdown-banner.svg 
--export-png=fedora-countdown-banner.png

I'm attaching a modified version of the svg so you'd only need one font 
- Isabella - the rest of the fonts are converted to paths. Isabella is 
available here and is LGPL-licensed:

So here is how this could work, sanity checks welcome:

- need a script to:
   - call counter.py with the correct value, incrementing that value 
every time it's called
   - regenerate the svg
   - run the inkscape command above to export the svg to png

- need a cron script to call the above at say every night at midnight.

- need counter.py and the attached updated svg

- need to install the Isabella font

If the png is saved out to a directory accessible to the web then anyone 
wanting to display the counter could simply use that image.

Makes sense? Is this do-able?

How far in advance are we generally going to display the counter?
Would it be preferrable to batch generate a file for each date in
advance, then have some server side code that includes the correct
one?

Using the mirror list, if you use the filter on the right, I think you
can list only mirrors that have Fedora 7:

We can use that one too you know! Just put the id "conter-text" on the 
tspan (not the text) attribute that holds the number!

Thanks, I made my SVGs counter-enabled, if someone post a cron script 
maybe I will use it too...
BTW, if don't and I decide to bother and update it by hand (weak 
chance), the release date is still the one in the schedule [1]?

yes.

How does the date thing work?  Is it sufficient to:
 convert werewolf8_color.svg werewolf8_color.png
and post the png file somewhere accessible, once a day and it
automatically counts down?  if so that should be easy to get running.

(I note that convert in Fedora 6 will segfault doing so, but rawhide works.)

Well you'd have to input the number to the SVG generation script too so 
we need a script with smarts to figure out what the day value should be.

Also I think convert would work fine for Nicu's artwork but the banner I 
did will need to be modified to work with convert (only comes out right 
if you use command-line inkscape) - it's totally do-able just a little 
less blingy.

Since you're in the web group, you should be able to
git clone ssh://git.fedoraproject.org/git/hosted/fedora-web.git
and have push access.  

Right now, the idea is to use some python in the templates to point to
pre-generated counter images.  We're hoping to have a working version at
least at http://fedoraproject.org/_/en/ by tonight, then see about when
we can move the main website to use these templates.

As long as we're doing this, can we also get a countdown to End of
Life for Fedora 6 ? :-)  Days remaining until no more updates.  At
Fedora 8 + 1 month, that would be December 8.  December 7 would be
more fitting, and in fact is a work day (December 8 is a Saturday).

Since about 20 minutes ago, the website is being generated from Genshi
templates using a python script.  This should make the site easier to
maintain, and also enable cool features like our brand new automatically
updating release counter :)  Finally, almost all of the strings and
images should now be translatable, enabling the site to reach a much
wider audience.

The site is updated directly from the master branch in the git repo, so
we should be continuing to develop/improve the script/templates in
separate branches now.  I can't wait to see where we can go with this.

No, I don't think it would work for the _color_ version (but I can 
simplify it, remove gradients and drop shadow - they are less noticeable 
when the image is exported at a small size as it should).

You know, we can get to an alternate route: export the bitmap one time 
and then add the counter with imagemagick or gd and even leave out all 
the font availability problem by creating pre-rendered images for all 
the possible digits, from 0 to 9 (yes, it is old school compared with 
modifying the SVG on the fly, but is tried and true).

Looking at the image, it seems to be pregenerated. It would be better if 
  we can provide a dynamically updated banner that others can copy into 
their blogs. Clicking on the banner could lead to the release schedule.

They are pregenerated.  If someone wants to do the work I'm sure it

It is nice, but the counter picture is much narrower then the previous 
banner and it slightly breaked the page layout as the left collum 
shrinked and text overflows to next lines.

Subject: Some Wiki Pages Updates

Hi all,

Before the release of Fedora 8 I thought that it is time for cleaning up
the Wiki.  The headings of all pages should look now more or less the
same.  I moved some TOC and made on some pages minor layout changes.  I
call it "wiki corporate identity" :-)

During the work on the wiki a few pages were moved. Please check on your
personal pages and all pages you are looking at if all links still work.
   I guess that most links are ok or updated but it's possible that I
miss one or two.

IMHO it was a very small step to make our "developer" wiki a bit more
user-friendly and/or reader-friendly.

We could provide some javascript to select the correct image.

I'm borrowing from Ubuntu's code here, but I've attached an example of
how this could be done using Javascript.

The .js shoud be hosted on our site, and it would be even better if
rather than using the client date, it was served up dynamically to
just show the correct number.

People can then just include the javascript into their own sites, eg:

Yeah, that does look a bit awkward.  What do you think about it now?  I
moved the text to a new line and lowered its font size a bit.

Better, at least it looks like it is meant to be like this. I would 
probably prefere to make a left collum wider thru css, but this works too.

Great idea!  I modified the script a tiny bit to match the logic that's
the website is using to generate the counter:

  var today = new Date();
  var release = new Date("November 8, 2007 14:00:00 UTC");
  var millisBetweenDates = release - today;
  var days = Math.ceil(millisBetweenDates/1000/60/60/24);
  if (days < 0) days = 0;

  document.write('<div id="banner"><a href="http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/8/Schedule"><img src="http://fedoraproject.org/images/counter/' + days + '.png" alt="Fedora 8 Werewolf unleased in " + days + " days." style="border: none;"></a></div>');

Ah, somebody mentioned this in #fedora-websites as well.  Hopefully, we
can have separate "0 days" and "F8 is here!" banners for those last 24
hours :)  

M?ir?n- could you create a "Released" banner to show after the countdown
is over?

I like what you did, in terms of information elements (links).  

I'm not so hot on the colored boxes.  Maybe the icons aren't needed,
either.  Just have links like?

I want to see the search box centered, even on a 900px wide screen, but
I guess the left column is just a bit too wide for that.  So, whatever.

Is there any advantage or disadvantage to having Google mentioned on the

until the deal has been finished I didn't want to mention google with
regard to that search b/c I wasn't clear if we could.

+1, Is a good start (I am not very happy with the background colors for 
the boxes, but this is something absolutely minor). I wanted to try my 
hand with a mockup too, but a lot of other things got in the way.

How about using "Google search for domain", and having a radio group to 
search "web" or "*.fedoraproject.org"?

Now as we have the counter up and running for a few days already, how 
about when the count-down end? We can replace it with something like 
"Werewolf arrived"  or "the Werewolf has landed" [1]

A crack-idea, maybe doable for the next release: it would be interesting 
if in the last day we switch to counting the remaining hours.

oh, i always thought it was the werewolf where the person turns into a wolf

Sure, lycanthropy is the main meaning of the werewolf term. But some,

I think is better (won't comment about localization).
But for me, as I don't keep the browser window maximized, this does not 
fit on one line. I  like the large fonts, so maybe reduce some of the 
redundancy, do not repeat "Fedora" in the title of each link (even if it 
help with search engines).
Or at least have the text centered, so the second line does not look 
that bad.

I assume that you're referring to the test page at
http://flysheet.com.cn/.  

That is a test page included with our operating system; we don't
actually control the site in question.  For more information, please
refer to http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ServerTestPage

You might want to try contacting the administrator or ISP of the sites
involved instead.

I've put the counter script up at /js/release-counter.js for now (see
http://ricky.fedorapeople.org/ for an example of it in action).  Once we
have an image for after Fedora has been released, I can add that case to
the javascript.  

The usage is something like:

I haven't explicitly put up instructions for this anywhere else, but
hopefully, people can start using it on their websites/blogs and such

You should be able to determine the ISP by doing a whois lookup on the

Pretty much every web page does these days, sadly.  I'm sure we can do 
something to make it less so, like add a header or some text above the 
search widgetry.

He just grabbed a couple items.  We can change those, easily.  This was 
more of a mockup than intended for final, but it's a helluva good 
starting point IMO.

We currently have a German translation of the site there (just not
pushed live yet).  I'm not sure that it has been reviewed/proofed yet,

I think the second one is better. It explains what x86 etc means but I 
think it can be improved.

We should probably show Live media as the first choice in the list and 
mention that we recommend it for the desktop users and that it can be 
installed to a hard disk.

If I wanted to download a CD image as opposed to a DVD image, the page 
doesn't make it obvious. Live image for x86_64 is DVD size as opposed to 
the x86 version which is CD size. I wouldn't able to get that 
information easily from the download page now.

We should explain what a torrent is.

The network installation option is not explained in this page as opposed 
the first one.

We should also note that the Free Media program is a volunteer one and 
encourage people to participate.

  * Why does the install DVD have a mirror list choice but not the Live 
media?

  * Have we decided which spins go to torrent.fedoraproject.org vs what 
goes into spins page? What's the difference between them? Where is that 
explained in a way end users reaching the page would understand it?

I love ivazques' version, #2. I think that the top three sections should 
use the css that the bottom two use though, and I think the bottom two 
sections visually should be called out a little differently (pale grey 
or blue bg maybe?) but the text i think is right, the organization i 
think is right!

I'm open to other opinions on this but for the majority of our users 
that don't follow Fedora, I think they'll be very disappointed in the 
live cd install process (which is basically just an image copy) there's 
no package selection and no upgrade.  I think, for this release, its 
best we just call it a live CD and leave it at that.

spins.fedoraproject.org is not listed as torrent anywhere on the page.  
I did that intentionally to avoid confusion.  "Torrent" is a 
distribution medium, spins are respins, they just so happen to use torrent.

AFAIK the games spin is ready, it's just waiting on releng to build the 
copy and send it (I've already had their test copy, uploaded it, added 
it to spins for test)

I don't know whether they would be disappointed. Live CD by design don't 
offer any package selection and other distributions are dealing with 
just fine. If the package selection is somewhat right, most users won't 
complain and just do some post installation configuration. The important 
things to highlight are:

* Live images are installable to hard disk or USB.

* The package selection and configuration is very good for a typical 
desktop user

Disagree. The fact that there is a network installation option at all is 
unknown to many users. You have to show that it does exist somewhere in 
that page. It is already highlighted in the existing page. Removing that

like for example, does the Fedora KDE spin go into spins page or the 
official torrents page? Which of the spins are mirrored and which ones 
are just distributed via the torrent?

I'd actually argue thats a marketing decision (whether or not KDE is 
linked on the get fedora page or not)  Simple icons would delineate 
between the two. 
My personal opinion is that nothing beyond the KDE and Gnome would be 
official at this point.

Right now no spins are mirrored though that may change soon.

Yes it is. So if I had to make the marketing decision, I would agree 
that GNOME and KDE should be both highlighted there. Also if only

I think the second look better: less crowded, due to the use of those 
boxes but don't like it does not flow horizontally as the first one do.

Hi,

I found a interesting function on Fedora website. That's website  
language.
But it is still not convenient for me because it only supports zh_CN.
There is no zh_TW. Could you support this function?

We'd definitely like to- the ability to translate the website is pretty
new, so we're still waiting for translations to come in.  I'm not sure
how active a Traditional Chinese team we have, though
(http://translate.fedoraproject.org/languages/zh_TW/various).

If you're interested in translating this, you can find the POT file at
http://translate.fedoraproject.org/POT/fedora-web.master/fedora-web.master.pot,
and we'd gladly accept and put up translations :)

Here's an quick take on get-fedora using that idea:

The main goal here was to present all of the choices to the users,
allowing them to narrow things down by download type, method, and
architecture.  I tried to use more of the available horizontal space, so
it might look slightly repetitive now.  Hopefully, some icons/graphics
can make this easier to use/look at.

What do you think?

I still think we need to make it clear that the GNOME and KDE Live Media 
  for x86 is CD size while the x86_64 edition is DVD size. We had lots 
of confusion on that in the previous release which we need to avoid now.

Other than that, pretty good.
