Hey, that's great to hear. In terms of current tasks for the Websites team, we have a few relevant tickets in the Fedora Infrastructure trac (see https://hosted.fedoraproject.org/projects/fedora-infrastructure/query?status=new&component=Webmaster for the list). In particular, it'd be great to hear any suggestions/ideas for ``Two clicks to LiveCD'' and ``Sponsorship prominence'' on the list, and we could possibly use a bit of help with getting a more consistent look and feel for a few more of our webapps/sites (I know that docs.fp.o and Bodhi might be able to use some templating work). The docs team might actually be working on this already--I'll ask daMaestro about that and see where we might be able to help him out a bit :) For the Translations ticket, I'm current looking into ways to do templating/translatable content for our static pages--I will try to update the list on this once I get something a bit more concrete (hopefully in the next few weeks). This should hopefully help increase websites activity a bit. Side note: How about we encourage contributors to send a self-introduction to the list, like the Infrastructure team? It'd be a great way to get to know everybody/suggest tasks for people. Any other suggetions for making the Websites team more open/approachable? Thanks, Ricky /me invites everybody to join/talk in #fedora-websites on Freenode. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I'm from Newcastle, Australia and work as a ColdFusion developer. Apart from ColdFusion I have worked extensively with Java - in particular the Apache Struts framework. I also have done a bit of PHP. My skills are primarily as a web developer of back-end stuff, as opposed to as a designer although I do have a good knowledge of HTML & CSS. I joined this list since I use Fedora as my desktop and hope to give back to the project in some way - the websites group seemed like a local place to join given my background. Me! Although these days I don't have so much time, I can always whip up graphics for the websites in a hurry here and there and I will be working on some plans for the front page for F8's release to match the new F8 artwork soon. ~m From mmcgrath at redhat.com Sun Sep 2 15:13:30 2007 From: mmcgrath at redhat.com (Mike McGrath) Date: Sun, 02 Sep 2007 10:13:30 -0500 Subject: Cattle call? Basically a way to click "download iso" and have it randomly direct them to a mirror to do so. Right now one has to go though the public mirrors. But once its done we'll new a few new graphics and some changes to the main page. -Mike From fedora-websites-list at redhat.com Sun Sep 2 16:16:15 2007 From: fedora-websites-list at redhat.com (Paul W. 2.1.

We had a repository viewer running that served this purpose but has been
disabled recently due to some issues. Jesse Keating, our release
engineer was trying to get this up and running. Jesse, is that still in
        progress?

Somewhat. Not a high priority as getting some other compose issues
sorted out, but I will be looking at it further in the F8 development

Core and Extras repository was merged for Fedora 7 so what was in Extras
for Fedora Core 5 will be in Fedora 7 repository too unless they were
        orphaned in the mean time.

You can find the list of packages in every version including orphaned
packages in the package database available at
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb. It is more developer oriented but
will be useful for your needs.

        4. Skopiuj i wklej klucz SSH w odpowiednie miejsce, aby zakończyć zakładanie konta.

        2.2. Konta do tłumaczenia oprogramowania

As a user, it is extremely important to know what is available beyond what
is on the CD's and DVD's. I am doing clean installs of F7 on several
systems, and need to bring in the packages that I had installed on my FC5
systems. Some of them had been obtained from the FC5 extras repository
and others were from elsewhere. Some of what was not included in FC5
extras may now be in F7, but I don't know. I need to be able to sort this
          out.

Isn't that what yum and company are for though? The old list contains

          Hi

          After reading
          http://dimitris.glezos.com/weblog/2007/09/07/mirror-manager-look-n-feel/
, I wanted to share a few quick thoughts.

While the mirror list that we have in place now does look much better,
we generally shouldn't exposing this to end users at all. EPEL comes in
top of Fedora in the mirror list filter and shows all the versions of
Fedora including the ancient versions which probably should move into a
            separate page for archived releases.

The mirror list filter should point people to the actively maintained
releases or just the latest release. Most users would use EPEL via the
repository release package and not download individual packages from the
mirrors and hence should be below Fedora.

The front page of Fedora should feature a prominent download button
leading to a easy choice of spins, architecture and region in simple
          plain language.
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download makes it much more approachable
compared to a long list of mirrors where people not familiar with the
mirror structure is bound to get confused which does happen often.

It would also be better if all the sub domains had the same look at
feel. http://docs.fedoraproject.org still retains the old design for
          example.

I saw that on http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/publiclist/ I think it
looks great. There are a couple of comments related to the ordering and
making it more obvious which is the current release. And we shouldn't
be exposing users to the public mirror list? I disagree, especially
during release time people need to figure out which mirrors work (many
of them get overwhelmed) and the public list is kept fairly accurate
because of its checks and when a user gets to a mirror that is too slow
for them, they can take a closer look.

Already being worked on as discussed here:

           https://hosted.fedoraproject.org/projects/fedora-infrastructure/ticket/74

This took quite a bit more effort then we thought, good thing we have
          mdomsch on hand :)

This is on hold as they are moving to a project from SoC, I'm not sure
of its projects. As for the rest of our projects:

          https://hosted.fedoraproject.org/projects/fedora-infrastructure/ticket/55

It's set up as an F9 target. Ricky and glezos in particular have
excelled in producing these looks. http://fedorapeople.org/
          http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/publiclist/ and
http://hotsed.fedoraproject.org/ are just some examples of their recent
handy work. We're quite lucky to have them.

This shouldn't be the primary interface. Users should be able to select
the spin, type of media or installation, arch and region and get a url
to ISO directly. Only if you opt to see the mirror list should you be
shown that. The idea behind that is to not confuse users with a long
list of mirrors and users wouldn't have to know the mirror structure to
figure out the right location either.

Hello. Unfortunately, we cannot address this request without more
information about what your problem is.

If you are contacting us because you saw a page like the one at
          http://publictest1.fedora.redhat.com/, please see
          http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ServerTestPage for more information about
          what this means.

Otherwise, if you have the Fedora Linux distrubution on your computer
and want to remove it, you will find somebody that can actually access
          your computer to do it.

Either way, feel free to reply with more specifics, and we'll try to
direct you to the right place to ask for help.

          Thanks,
          Ricky

We really need to get a sponsorship page built and linked off of the
main page at fedoraproject.org. My web skills are terrible or I'd do it
myself, anyone interested in this task? It would be a page where we can

        2. Accounts e sottoscrizioni

Håll listan i bokstavsordning.

              5. Skapa en ny .po-fil för din lokal:

                 make po/sv.po

                 make html-sv
                -

End user topics like this are best discussed on Fedora-list:

          https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list

Or to join #fedora on irc.freenode.net

I started a static page monday night, but have not had time to finish
it up, looking to chisel out a couple hours this weekend. Glezos had
said (irc) that Ricky had also perhaps started something or worked on
this? the only sponsor I could find is Dell?

Also, is this just display of current sponsors or a 'You should be a
sponsor becuase x, y, z and it'd be cool of u' Or both?

          Cheers,

          Hi Craig,

We have at least to my knowledge two new sponsors, that were already
          announced to the Infrastructure Team
But since i dont have the full list of them, i wont disclose none and let
          Mike do that :)

          Thanks,
          Paulo

Its a list of our current sponsors. We've kind of neglected them in the
past and since we're actively looking for new sponsors I'd really like
to show them what they'll be getting.

Sorry, but unfortunately, we do not control that page and cannot update
it. Searching around, I found that they already have an issue open
          about this broken link:
          http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=81270, so hopefully,
          this will be corrected soon.

The webmaster at fedoraproject.org email is mostly for issues relating to
the Fedora Project's websites. If you're looking for support, take a
look at some of help resources listed at

          Team,

So, my best skill is not designing stylish and good lookin'
websites. I can hack things along, but that is what they end up
          looking like.

I'm submitting a request for design ideas for a Fedora Pastebin. I
started something, it works, it looks ok; but the graphics are not
mine. On that note, if the graphics used are yours... may we use them?
;-) I found them on the wiki. Anywho, I'd love ideas and proposals. If
anyone has time to do a mock up, or even just give feedback, that
would be awesome. The second request is for a Fedora Search System.
Again, I can hack something together, but would rather spend the time
actually making the search system work well. Any feedback and design
          mockups are very welcome.

              * Pastebin: http://f3dora.org/ (or http://paste.fedoraunity.org)
... (or hopefully also http://paste.fedoraproject.org/). The
pastebin runs on turbo gears using the Stickum codebase
                (http://code.google.com/p/stickum/) which uses the genshi
engine. I can port any design over to the template engine so
don't restrict yourself worrying about what templating engine is
                in use.
              * Search System: http://searchfedora.org/ . This system has not
been worked on for quite some time now. I just ran out of free
time. I've started working on it again. It is really going to be
awesome. I'd really like a kickass design for it as I see this
system bringing great value to the community. I'm hoping I have
time to fix it up in the next few days. I've been packaging up
the code that runs it the last day or so and expect to run
another index soon. The template engine is fairly homebrew, but
has very, very few limitations. I'm looking to integrate a cool
image I've found on the wiki

but really can't spend time designing the interface while at the
same time working on the backend.

I really hope there is some interest from this team to be a part
of these two projects. I'll end up hacking together designs for both
if I don't find any takers. Thanks for working on Fedora! We all
appreciate the hard work our websites team puts into the look and feel
of our presence on the Internet.

What exactly is the purpose of the PasteBin? Could you give an example of
how it would be used to benefit the community?
Also, you should talk to someone in the artwork list about those images.

We use pastebins extensively while supporting users on IRC. So we have a
choice of using a non-branded Fedora pastebin where we have no influence
over the look and functions of the pastebin, or we end up with users
using a "commercial" pastebin (read: pastebin with advertisements). We
can also develop a client that can be yum installed for helping users
share needed information. Inclusive, we could have predefined tests to
help us better support users via IRC. Example: irc-help --profile ...
will give us something like: uname -a; lspci [...] we could even import
smolt stuff (and even have the pastebin pass off the smolt profile).
There are lots of neat things we can do that will both help our IRC
users and those that support them.

If done correctly, the fedora pastebin would also be integrated with
other fedora systems. We could start FAQ items from issues found on the
pastebin. Integration with bugzilla. This discussion should be another
thread if others want to brainstorm.

          Hey Jonathan,

You should coordinate with Ricky/lmacken here. They already have a working
stickum in our test environments, and i know that the developer of stickum
agreed in giving them access to the SVN. So you should get that also, and
have the oportunity to submit code (if it interests you of course).

The current implementation by Ricky is in:
          http://publictest5.fedora.redhat.com/stickum/

Luke also has one , already connected to FAS, but i think its currently
          offline.

          Thanks,
          Paulo

          This is good news.

I went with stickum so I could contribute to the source and we (read:
existing fedora infrastructure) will benefit. I don't want our pastebin
to be "just another pastebin" which are what the comments I've gotten so
far seem to state. I don't think there will be any objections in the
Fedora Unity group to use proper Fedora infrastructure hosting the
pastebin. We've wanted one for some time, I needed to learn turbogears
and we (Fedora Unity) just got a new dedicated server to run stuff on.
This was a good thing to get up and running and it gave me a break from
all the Plone work I've been working on. I will, of course, point any
domain in the public scope at the Fedora hosted pastebin. Right now,
this gives me the freedom to try new things without any red tape, not to
say we really have any, moreso I don't want to be responsible for
anything "bad" happening. Thanks for the feedback.

now work via mirrormanager redirect magic. This is basically the full
path to the actual file on the master servers, but will automagically
redirect to a (local) mirror with that file. This can be used for any
file stored in the master mirror tree.

Hopefully this will un-block the "2-clicks to a LiveCD" feature. Heck

First, I want say that I am very sorry that you're having so much trouble
          with Fedora.

Second, I would like to point out that this is not the correct list for this
inquiry. We handle problems dealing with the website only. The correct place
          for this is fedora-list.

And lastly, all operating systems must update. Even Windows has dozens of
critical updates that one must apply every time you install it. And
personally, I switched back to Windows XP for a breif period a few weeks ago
and it was absolutely horrible. I'd also like to point out that the
Australian broadband structure is horrible. If you don't like downloading
the ISO from the internet, there are dozens of places online to buy Fedora
on disk for very little money. I do hope you're able to find someone who can
help you get the most out of Fedora, or at least help you find what works
          best for you.

          Welcome Brian,
The list you are in is for issues with the website only. On that note,
you could benefit from learning (x)HTML, CSS, and PHP. Other knowledge of
content management systems such as Plone and wiki systems such as MoinMoin
          will help.

As for your last two questions: You might be able to run MS Office with
wine, but a far better choice would be OpenOffice.org. It will open almost
any office suite's documents. Yes, you can play mp3's in Fedora. Go to
http://rpm.livna.org and follow their instructions on how to install the
repository. After you have the livna repository, install VLC Media Player(it
          will play almost anything).

!!! Important !!! : For further questions on how to do certain things in
Fedora, consult fedora-list, or http://fedoraforum.org, not this list

Any idea where these people are getting this email address from? Do
we need to look at the "feedback" or "contact us" mechanism on the
site? It seems it is possibly not serving us well? Should

Also should we look at this being a closed list?

fedora-websites-list handles the email for webmaster at fedoraproject.org
(somebody has to do it :)) I definitely agree that we need to make the
exact purpose fo this address much clearer, though (anybody want to
do a separate contact page with fuller explanations?)

Right now, I'm trying to make a system to generate the static pages from
templates which should hopefully make changing all of the footers much
easier (I hope to have something solid by Wednesday).

          Thanks,
          Ricky

For those on the list that aren't familiar there's a bit of recent
history that goes along with the webmaster at fp.o address in that we just
recently started redirecting it to this list. As far as making sure
people know what to use webmaster for, I think people know the purpose.
I don't think the person that sent the initial email actually had any
actual changes in mind (it's very easy to find the right people to
contact or bugzilla submissions) but instead of doing the work to submit
bugs he was probably just frustrated and decided to complain to someone
with no real end game in mind.... We've all been there before :)

          To whom it may concern,
I recently installed Fedora Core 7 in my laptop.
The only problem which I have faced with FC7 and FC5 is Add and Remove
          Packages.
Every time I click the Add and Remove Sofwares, it gives a message bearing
          "unable to retrive software information".
As far I searched the Net, it has a solution which I could not find.
I want to save all the RPM's on a directory and want the application (add
remove sofware) to look to that
folder whenever needed to install something.
          Your cooperation will be appreciated.
          Waiting for response.
          Regards,
          ZAKI

          Hi!

The webmaster at fedoraproject.org address is only for issues related to
Fedora's websites. For general Fedora support, please refer to the
          help resources described at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate
(in particular you might want fedora-list or the #fedora IRC channel on
          Freenode).

          Thanks,

To answer your question: No. Fedora will generally be incompatible
with software written for Mac OS X. Reading around a bit, Shake seems
to have a Linux version, but I have no experience with such things.

Those are frequently inaccessible during the release time from the

The directory pub/fedora/web on the master servers contains the home
page content, exactly so it can be distributed to the mirrors. The
release notes size isn't so great that mirrors would object to those
being added under this same directory.

The normal URL for the release notes is at
          http://docs.fedoraproject.org/release-notes/ and subdirs thereunder.
If the release notes content is posted to the mirrors to show up under
          pub/fedora/web, I expect we could make docs.fp.o/release-notes do a
          redirect to http://download.fp.o/pub/fedora/web/release-notes.
There's a propogation delay though; you can edit content on docs.fp.o
and it's live nearly immediately; once you're doing http redirects to
mirrors, you need ~24 hours to make sure the updated content has
gotten to the mirrors. Right now there are 13 mirror servers carrying
          this content globally.

          Thanks,
          Matt

The webmaster at fedoraproject.org address is only for issues related to Fedora's websites. For general Fedora support, please refer to the help resources described at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate. If you're using Ubuntu, look at http://www.ubuntu.com/support instead. To answer some of your questions, ssh-keygen -t dsa should create an id_dsa.pub and id_dsa in ~/.ssh. This shouldn't really be related to gpg. If this doesn't work, try looking for other support as mentioned above. Good luck, Ricky -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... The design requirements as I know them are: :: big breath :: - search box must only be on start.fedoraproject.org and search.fedoraproject.org (not other properties like www.fedoraproject.org) - search box can't be directly incorporated into a client application (e.g. firefox search toolbar) without amending agreement - can't provide substantially equivalent search or ad results from another search or ad provider on these 2 properties while agreement in place (initial term: 2 years) - can't co-mingle search capability with pornographic, hate-related, violent, or illegal content on these properties - must comply with search provider's brand usage, copyright, and trademark guidelines (details provided at URL), including showing an appropriate search partner logo on all search and result pages, at least 75x32 pixels above the fold (see mockup for example of how we fulfill this requirement) There are further restrictions on implementation of search results page (hosted by Red Hat): - search results and ads can only be displayed on start.fedoraproject.org and search.fedoraproject.org - can't edit, modify, truncate, filter, or change the order of search results or ads returned - can't co-mingle search results or ads from search provider with those not from search provider - can't modify search terms from users before passing on with search request - must pass end user IP address and user agent in addition to search terms with request - can't frame the results page or destination pages (e.g. HTML frame or iframe) - can't monkey with destination page URLs (e.g. to add redirect page, insert interstitial page ad, etc) - can't implement click tracking of ads or search results - can't display search results or ads in pop-up, pop-under, exit windows, expanding buttons, animation, or other funky/scammy stuff like that - can't return search results or ads to parties other than real human end users (e.g. the search provider doesn't provide a free web services search API, and thus we can't provide one using their backend) - can't inhibit the display of search results or ads on result pages - result page must display 2 wide format ads and 5 narrow format ads (if available for search term) above the fold on an 800x600 browser window - ads must be explicitly marked as "sponsored links" - can't re-sell the search or ad service - can't generate automatic or fraudulent queries or ad clicks - can't encourage end users to click on ads by offering incentives or other methods that are deceptive or fraudulent - can't cache search results or ads in a non-transitory manner If you think you can whip up something for our start page, please do so and soon. Unfortunately the agreement isn't done yet but it would be good to get some looks together. I've CC'd the websites team so they know as well. -Mike From chtaylo4 at gmail.com Wed Sep 26 15:28:20 2007 From: chtaylo4 at gmail.com (Chris Taylor) Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 11:28:20 -0400 Subject: download 2.6.20 kernel Message-ID: hello all, I was wondering how can I download the 2.6.20 kernel for fc6? v/r Chris Taylor From fedora-websites-list at redhat.com Wed Sep 26 17:42:43 2007 From: fedora-websites-list at redhat.com (Ricky Zhou (ricky)) Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 13:42:43 -0400 Subject: web/static/F-7 relnotes.html,1.2,1.3 Message-ID: <200709261742.l8QHght0007681@cvs-int.fedora.redhat.com> Author: ricky Update of /cvs/fedora/web/static/F-7 In directory cvs-int.fedora.redhat.com:/tmp/cvs-serv7644 Modified Files: relnotes.html Log Message: Removing link to fp.o/release-notes (keeping release-notes directory though). From kod712 at hotmail.com Thu Sep 27 12:54:50 2007 From: kod712 at hotmail.com (kod712 at hotmail.com) Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2007 08:54:50 -0400 Subject: Introduction Message-ID: Hello All, I hope I am doing this right, but I am sure someone will let me know if I am not. My name is Art Abate and I have just signed up with the Fedora Project. I reside in the Eastern states (EST) and have lived here all my life. I have roughly 15 years experience in the IT field, with a majority of that in the Systems/Network administration area. (Primarily in the Windows space) 5 or 6 years ago I started to redirect my attention and efforts more towards Open Source; specifically Linux. (Good move on my part!) As mentioned, my skills include system and network administration and troubleshooting, and also website creation and maintenance. I have a good working background in routers, switches, (CCNA, CCNP certified), systems administration (Microsoft and Red Hat) and network troubleshooting.(capture analysis) My software skills are in Apache, PHP, MySQL, some C programming, and a few scripting languages. In a nutshell, I believe I have sat back and watched long enough, and would like to contribute. For years now I have enjoyed the fruits of other people's hard work with Linux, and keeping it alive and fresh, so now I would like to return what I can to the community in any way I can. I would be happy to assist in anyway I can, and hopefully be able to learn more. I have started learning Python a little better, so I hope that helps. I do have test servers in my possession and more than willing to put them to work as needed. As a couple of personal notes, I have to admit I have acquired 2 addictions over the past few years; Mountain Dew and Linux! Yes, I do sleep occasionally. I have also built and maintained many of my own personal websites. The most recent I have just started to work on is linuxnation.org. I have high hopes for this site and would like to take it as far as it can go. When I am not in front of a server "playing", I also enjoy getting out on my 07 Heritage Softail. My wife and I enjoy just getting away, even for just a few hours, and coming back with a fresh new perspective on things. I am still fumbling around with the other parts of getting added to the EditGroup and adding myself as a contributor, but I am thinking maybe that comes after this part. Not sure, so any help would be appreicated. Thank you all for your time in reading this, and I am very excited to finally be a real part of the community I have watched grow and flourish over the years. If you require ANY further information, please do not hesitate to ask. To avoid confusion, could you change your WikiName to ArthurAbate in order to match what it says in FAS (just log in and change your name under the preferences)? After doing this, just re-add yourself to EditGroupQueue, and you will be added to EditGroup. Thanks, Ricky -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... For more information about this, please refer to http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ServerTestPage. If you would like to contact the owner of that domain, you should be able to find their contact information in a WHOIS lookup. (Use a site like http://www.whois.sc/).
