We had a discussion with Stephen off-list on this. New patches are
attached - this time, most of the DEBUG messages is left there to
provide debugging information, only using debug_level 1 instead of 0.
On critical errors, the gettextized ERROR() macro is used to provide
(potentionally localized) information to the user with less technical
details.
