I see the same thing on real hardware. I did find that i get the
following when running ltsp-build-client:

  Installing: kernel #####################
[312/410]
/etc/sysconfig/mkinitrd: line 13: syntax error near unexpected token
`else'
/etc/sysconfig/mkinitrd: line 13: `else'
WARNING: /dev/root is a not a block device, skipping

after editing /etc/ltsp/mkinitrd/sysconfig-mkinitrd (adding then on the
end of line 13) this message disappears, but i still can't boot further
then the brief plymouth display.
