gdm is the Red Hat preferred X display startup tool, and even 
if you start a KDE window manager, odds are it is 'gdm' 
running the show behind the scenes at the central server -- 
test thus:

  ps afx | grep gdm

and it you see a line, it is there...

the 'cat' types the two line script -- I was showing the 
directory, and the permissions, and the script all on one 
line, to save typing a couple of <enter>'s   -- false 
economy <grin> -- scripting is not hard -- an advanced LUG 
presentation I used as a presentation outline 18 months agos
