[K12OSN] Simple Windows Manager

Being the cheap sod that I am and not wanting to waste the earth’s resources I have set up some 386’s and low end 486’s as workstations.  They work really well at run level 3 (a shell) but struggle rather running KDE.  Are there any basic gui / window managers that will run under X but not over stretch the capacities of these old machines?  It seem a waste to just junk them.  Can I specify a particular windows manager to load to a particular workstation.? All these older machines have assigned IP addresses and are identified by their MAC address.
