[K12OSN] RH7.2 to RH8.0 migration issue

I recently migrated one of our samba servers from RH7.2 to RH8.0. Actually
it was a new install of RH8.0 on new hardware followed by copying over the
appropriate files/directories. All seemed to running very well, but I
discovered a small glitch last week. The output of my cron backup job was
not appearing in the root inbox. Upon looking at maillog I see the
following pair of messages each time the cron job was run. I use pine to
occasionally look at the output. In any event, the cron job was running

relay=root localhost

ctladdr=root (0/0), delay=00:10:24, xdelay=00:00:20, mailer=relay,
pri=30243, relay=localhost.localdomain. [], dsn=4.0.0,
stat=Deferred: Connection refused by localhost.localdomain.

I took a look at maillog on a RH7.2 samba server and this is the what is in
the log.

ctladdr=root (0/0), delay=00:05:31, xdelay=00:00:01, mailer=local,
pri=30700, dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent

The major difference seems to be mailer=relay versus mailer=local. Can
anyone give me an explanation of how or where this is set?

Note that on both samba servers, the sendmail service was not started.

For the heck of it, I started sendmail on RH8.0 (service sendmail start) and
several seconds later, the output from all the cron jobs, going back to when
the server was installed, appeared in the root inbox.
