I know what you mean, except that my box was extremely slow on single
cpu kernel...

It is just good to find out that redhat 8.0 was a little more solid than
I had thought...

Ugh, I'm scared to switch back. I've been running beautifully without
the smp kernel. I'd hate to go back now. I'm in a "If it ain't broke,
don't fix it" kinda mood right now =)

The box said "Requires Windows 95 or better." So I installed LINUX.

UPDATE:
This indeed was the gigabit nic.  Contacted 3-com for a beta driver, 
Which fixed the problem...

Low, and behold, redhat came out with fixes to the problem a week later.

Patience never was one of my virtues :-)
