Re: [K12OSN] cost savings of Linux relative to M$ School License Agreement

Thanks for all the feedback so far!

As an aside, we all need tools to fight off the "windows as defacto standard" argument. The arguments likely to reach or convince administrators are those that save money, and those that help kids.

I have something of a reputation as an open-source/linux/gpl zealot around our district. But I also realize it will take more than "it's better 'cuz it's not microsoft" to convince most supt-level administrators that open source is a valuable tool. It has to be easy to use (it is), and (I hate this part) run certain legacy applications. Accelerated Reader and Aeries are two problem children that come to mind.

In the meantime, we will keep plugging along on the infrastructure/server side of the equation.

The purpose of this whole exercise is an attempt to quantify our cost savings in a way that non-technical people will understand, and if I'm lucky, appreciate ;)

BTW, anyone having any luck convincing your wintel users to try openoffice, esp those that already have M$ Office?

Cheers,

-Jeff
