Try a Supermicro X5DP8-G2 motherboard + 742S case + 3 18.4Gb 15K rpm 
U160 drives + 4Gb memory + Adaptec 2010s + Dual 2.4GHz Xeon, 533 FSB = 
(about) $2800.00 US.  See Googlegear for MB,case and CPU.  PC Solutions 
for drives ($82.00 each).  Memory and 2010s, numerous vendors.  MB 
actually supports up to 12Gb.  System is very responsive.

Perhaps someone can do better?
