just fine. The terminal is a generic pc with a 3C905B-TX nic. It has
worked fine until now. One caveat: I am sharing one nic on the server
using eth0 for 192.168.0.254 and eth0:1 for 192.168.1.254. This setup
has worked fine in my previous setups.

instead of adding the extra subnet as an alias, try adding it as an additional scope for that device with iproute2, viz, (copy/paste the following to your root shell. as always - READ ANYTHING someone says to paste into your root shell)

# copy/paste START # delete all addresses from device eth0 ip addr flush dev eth0

# add both 'scopes' with iproute2
ip addr add 192.168.0.254/16 dev eth0 brd +
ip addr add 192.168.1.254/16 dev eth0 brd +

# ok, what happened ?  should look like the following ;
ip addr ls dev eth0
#2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 100
#    link/ether 00:c0:26:6a:ee:fe brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
#   inet 192.168.0.254/16 brd 192.168.255.255 scope global eth0
#   inet 192.168.1.254/16 brd 192.168.255.255 scope global secondary eth0
# copy/paste END
