We had around 10 people rendering animations with very little lag. Chances are, unless they're copying exactly what you're doing, all 15 students won't be rendering at the same time. Besides, if you really want, you could develop your animations/pictures/whatever it is you do with blender, then set up a mosix cluster after school and render it under the cluster. Either way, i think this would work. I believe we were using a dual p4 2.4ghz 4gig(ram) server, so our server is pretty beefy....
During development time, like i said, it was perfect. (I don't know if it was doing hardware of software rendering...i'm just the admin, i set it up, that's all.) ^.^

How responsive was it?

Did it do software rendering on the server or hardware rendering on the
client?

What I'm thinking of is a class of 15 art students learning 3D modelling.
