That is certainly true when you build custom installs of an assortment
of applications in the same box, which used to be the only way to
do anything useful on a unix system.   Even if you use RPMs from
different sources you have to be careful about keeping matching
programs and libraries.   However, these issues go away when you
use apt or yum to upgrade from a single repository and these days
you can get just about anything you want that way.
