[K12OSN] Emergency...please help

you did:
> [root spongebob /]# du --max-depth=1 | less

An biggest (ant important in this context are)

> 2715000 ./home (it is on separate partition)
> 1359968 ./var
> 2501800 ./usr
> 603680 ./opt

So, In /usr you hold permanent and not quickly enlarging data.

In /opt you cannot erase anything.

So, your problem is in /var.

it may be in
/var/log (misrotated logfiles)
/var/spool (mail or printing spooler and user unread mail, if you use
dendmail)
/var/ftp, if you use ftp server
/var/www, if you use www server with default options.

best and quickest way to solve problem:
copy all of your /var tree to /home/var , erase original /var directory
and make softlink to /home/var

On this way you move all your /var content to another partition and you
have 1.3G free space on /
