reboot to single user,  manually fsck everything, and backup over the network.

Clean the Server Internals, particularly the CPU heatsink+fan, then re-seat the RAM, Processor, Adapter Cards, and anything else that looks re-seatable..  You can also clean various edge connectors with a pencil eraser.

Bootup, and sink test.  If it hasn't fixed the problem, then something is amiss.  You have either been hacked, or your hardware has gone shonky.

btw, the logfile you are looking for is /var/log/messages.  Open this file, scroll to the end, and work your way backward until you find the server restart.  Just before that point you will see the last dying words from your beloved kernel as she went down.
