[K12OSN] proc maxed out

I ran top and it showed one user using up most of the cpu. I rebooted the
server, which took 45 minutes to shutdown. And the problem seemed to have
gone away. Except now X will not run on the server, but works fine on the
terminals. The monitor just keeps changing resolutions and with a blank
screen and finally errors out. By the way I am using version 3.1.1.

That should be enough to power what you're describing with ease, even
with your users running full-blown GNOME or KDE. What does top show
before the slowdown/seizure, and what does it show during the slowdown?
BTW, the AMD Athlon 2000+ runs at 1.67GHz.
