[K12OSN] authentication issue

Hi all,
Have any of you run into this before? I have a
dedicated box acting as an NIS server for all my Linux
clients.
I can login via webmin to the server to add users etc
but I can't login locally from the console either as
root or any other user but nis clients are receiving
accurate NIS information and are logging in fine. I am
sure the passwords are correct as they function
through a webmin login just not through any other
method. Any ideas? Thanks.
