With etherboot you have to run mknbi-linux to combine the vmlinuz & initrd
images (plus the nbi code, as well). 

With PXE, you just use the unmodified vmlinuz & initrd. Place the kernel 
and initrd in /tftpboot/lts/pxe/ and edit /tftpboot/lts/pxe/pxelinux.cfg/default
to match the filenames. That is all there is to it.
