[K12OSN] K12LTSP 4.1 Upgrade Problem -- Logout Crashes System

Today I upgraded to version 4.1 (FC2) from an old RH9 version.
It went reasonably well -- except that logging out from the console
crashes the server. Logging out from a VNC client or thin client does
not do this -- only from the console. I've tried several combinations
of gdm, kdm, xdm (changed with /etc/sysconfig/desktop) and different
Gnome, KDE, and Icewm sessions -- even mixed and matched -- all with the
same result. I can kill X with ctrl-alt-backspace with no problem, but
proper logouts just hang with a blank screen forever.
Here's some of the last bits happening before a crash using gdm:
Aug 16 17:55:28 orion gdm[2920]: Sending COOKIE 2920 8a...
Aug 16 17:55:28 orion gdm[2352]: Handling message: 'COOKIE 2920 8a...'
Aug 16 17:55:28 orion gdm[2352]: Got COOKIE == <secret>
Aug 16 17:55:28 orion gdm[2920]: gdm_server_reinit: Server for :0 is
about to be reinitialized!
Aug 16 17:55:28 orion gdm[2352]: (child 2920) gdm_slave_usr2_handler: :0
got USR2 signal
Aug 16 17:55:28 orion gdm[2920]: do_server_wait: Before mainloop waiting
for server
Aug 16 17:55:29 orion gdm[2920]: gdm_server_start: After mainloop
waiting for server
Aug 16 17:55:29 orion gdm[2920]: gdm_slave_start: Loop Thingie
Aug 16 17:55:29 orion gdm[2920]: gdm_slave_run: Opening display :0
Aug 16 17:55:29 orion gdm[2352]: (child 2920) gdm_server_usr1_handler:
Got SIGUSR1, server running
I really don't want to try to remember all the (undocumented) system
changes I've done that would be lost with a fresh install.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
