[K12OSN] Turn off iptables to use shorewall????

Hi everybody,
    I am building a firewall / squid/squidgard box out of K12ltsp 4.1.

I used chkconfig to detail what services are running and what are not at 
any given run level

One of the services is see listed is iptables.

My question is:
does this refer to the rule set that is configured on this machine,

OR

does this refer to the function of the kernal iptables.

I want to turn off the rule set and use shorewall,  but I DO NOT want to 
turn off the iptables functionality.

Need Input!
