I maintain that first make a server with only one card and do not start
any firewall. This would clear confusion about which is eth0 and eth1. 
After this starts and client boots then start a terminal and as root
give command
# neat
and edit the properties of eth0 by binding the MAC address. Then add the
second card for internet / other LAN access.
Confusion is compounded by the fact that a 2.4 series kernel detects one
cad as first and 2.6 series in reverse.
