[K12OSN] Editing gnome menus (again?)

All,

I have searched via google, searched the list, and still can't figure out how to add a new menu item in gnome (RH9.0).  I have added my .desktop in /usr/share/applications (I copied an existing entry and edited it to do what I wanted) .  If I use applications:/// in Nautilus, it is there, but it doesn't show up on the menu.  Is this really rocket science to add a menu item?

If there is a link to a 'treat-me-stupid' tutorial, I will gladly read it.
