Hmm ... you should be experiencing _ZERO_ slow down on that system with one
user :)
It may well be that it hasn't been loaded into memory, and as it's the first
run for the application it's naturally going to take a while to load up.
Once you've open OO, close it again, then try open a document and test it's
responses ...

Then close it, and open OO directly (new document sorta thing) and check it
out then.
Let us know how you get on

Thanks for quick response.  Here is some more information
LTSP Server -- Gig network card,  4gb memory, Dual Processors 2.4/2.8
xeon, will have to check to be sure, but again, same server as last year,
with an improvement of gig network card

only one user on and getting this response

not sure what else to configure on nics or what unnecessary graphical
stuff to disable.  System monitor doesn't show a very heavy load
