[K12OSN] XFree86, XF86Config -- X4 Drivers and X3 Drivers

We recently upgraded to 4.1.0 and had a bunch of our workstations that
needed settings in the lts.conf file. I played with the settings which I
had become accustomed. Most of the workstations and monitors will work
with XSERVER=XF86_SVGA, sometimes I need to set the vert refresh rate
too: X_VERTREFRESH=50-65.

We recently started playing the X4 drivers (ati, vesa, mga, etc.) as
indicated in the notes in the lts.conf file. Curiously, on some
everything seems to work but the mouse no longer works. If I set it back
to the X3 driver (XF86_SVGA instead of vesa, for example) the video and
the mouse works fine! I did notice that the X4 drivers seem to be
"crisper". On one monitor in particular, when switching back to
XF86_SVGA from vesa or ati, the characters on X the login screen were
noticeably "blurrier". Is this my imagination?

I would love to understand more, and went to Xorg, but didn't see much
useful. Anyone out there with any pointers?

TIA,

Rita Gibson
