[K12OSN] *sigh* FC2 issues

It is the other way around. (for the most part) There is stuff added to
the fedora kernels to make some of the newer features of the distro
work. That is my complaint with fedora- it is a testbed, and the kernel
is part of the package. (And it keeps breaking on the only hardware I
have available)

I should take a moment to be a little more accurate here, though.

Eric's work on whitebox gave me the idea that k12ltsp could possibly
become modular rather than distro specific- that is add on packages
(like ltsp.org) that turn any major distro into a k12 system. My
personal issues re fedora are kind of a side issue. In my situation,
for example, IT will eventually realize that Novell owns SuSe. We
already use netware. If by then they are sold on linux, they might
decide it is "safer" to look for a support and integration package from
Novell rather than replace Novell services with an open-source based
system (because it can't be real if it isn't outrageous..or something
like that.--or more likely it is worth the price if you can blame the
vendor and CYA), then dictate that all linux boxes must now be SuSe. It
is a scenario right out of Dilbert. Hopefully it won't come to this,
but the problem remains. If this (hopefully too cynical prediction)
happens I'm (and others like me)stuck. Ltsp .org could certainly make a
thinclient server out of SuSe.... then the rest would be manually
selecting packages and making roll-your-own-installation scripts a real
PIA undergone to protect corporate profits and syphon money out of
education.
A modular approach to thinclient/educational linux might avert this....
BTW should I learn OPenLDAPand get good with phpgroupware? would that
basically allow a cost-free substitute for Novell?any ideas ( I think
I mentioned this a while back..maybe I should look)
