When I get a hard drive that is too hozed for windows to deal with, I boot off 
CD 1 of SuSE and remove all partitions, then set one FAT partition. Of   
course, you will be unable to install SuSE, but that isn't the goal, anyway. 
After setting the one partition, I can almost always then install Windows. 
This should work with any Linux distro.
