Sync will slow writes down a lot.  It gives you more protection than the local file system in terms of having data committed to disk
when the application says it is done writing, but how often do you expect the NFS server to crash?
 
 run "service nfs reload"... if it gives you failed, you aren't running the NFS server.  To quickly turn in on, run "service nfs
start".

The command 'exportfs -a' will make the server re-read the exports files without a restart if NFS is already running.
