One of the prime differences between OpenOffice and StarOffice is that 
StarOffice includes an 'Access Compatible' database.
StarOffice is not free but much cheaper than the M$ alternative.   
Teachers can get an full copy for evaluation for free. 
Download it and see if it will meet your needs.
