What I did, is to *not start* with the /etc/inittab method. I started
the computer in runlevel 3 (text only) and logged in as root. Then I
started esd by hand at the commandline. I didnt' use the special port
flag. Basically, something like:

esd -nobeeps -tcp -public

And then tried to play sound to it from another workstation. (I don't
remember the command to play sound, but just type esd<tab><tab> and see
what esd tools are available, one of them allows you to play sounds to
remote computers)

Once I got sound working from a remote client to the local mac, I knew I
was in business. :) The next step I took was to type the esd command
with the -port extension (still at the commandline) with an & after it
to keep it in the background.

Then, I ran (from the commandline) X -query ser.ver.ip.addy -- to
connect to the session. I magically had sound when I opened an xterm
window and typed "esdplay filename.wav" -- and THEN I started working on
getting it automatic. First, I got the /etc/inittab esd stuff to be
automatic (still booting to a commandline) and then added the X -query
stuff.

Hopefully, if you do it one step at a time, you can find where the
glitch is at.

I'll help as much as I can -- but I dont' think I have any Bondi iMacs
around (at least not that I could mangle into a penguin suit)
