I don't know if anyone has answered your question, but the place to 
look is on Xfree86 (or now x.org)'s site.  What you want to do is find 
the supported hardware list and see what module those cards use.  Some 
really old cards were only supported in xfree3.x and many newer cards 
only work in xfree4.x.
